The most important tasks of studying this course are also: activation of cognitive activity of students, teaching them methods of rational explanation of historical phenomena, ways of understanding them, as well as the choice of personal orientations, conscious behavior and activities.
 
This course applies to the disciplines of general cultural training. It is generalizing, synthesizing and performs several socially significant functions: cognitive (intellectually-developing), worldview, practical-political, educational.
 
The cognitive (intellectually developing) function consists primarily in a concrete study of the historical path of development of human society (the history of world civilizations), in a theoretical generalization of facts and events, as well as in identifying the main trends in the history of the development of world civilizations and their features, which are reflected in historical sources.
 
The worldview function consists in the fact that a worldview - a view of the world, society, the laws of its development can be scientific only when it is based on objective reality, that is, historical facts. The history of world civilizations, its factual side, is the foundation on which the science of society is based. One of the most important worldview aspects of the study of the course is the formation of historicism of thinking, for it accustoms one to think in historical categories, to see society in development, to evaluate the phenomena of public life in relation to their past and correlate with the subsequent course of development.
