The mayor's mansion.
Meanwhile, a block away... Detroit is piecemeal like this -- well-kept areas abutting areas of abandonment and slums. There was a surprising lack of graffiti however, no matter where in town I went, I noticed. Here where I live, graffiti layers up to the point that it looks like some walls are made of it, and you can try to get rid of it, but it will be back within a day.
Welcome aboard the People Mover, Detroit's downtown monorail.
In addition to there not being much graffiti, there was a surprising lack of bums and panhandlers downtown. I'm used to my city, where there are beggars on every corner, and all of them want to strike up a conversation in hopes of guilting you out of your pocket change. Not long after passing this guy though, one panhandler who would have done my city proud did attach himself to us like a parasite and my usual technique of ignoring him did not work. It was either give him a dollar or beat him unconscious, so we gave him a dollar.
A monument to Detroit's history as a place where slaves fleeing the Southern United States could escape to freedom in Canada. That's Windsor, Ontario across the river.
