Fresno is an interesting place to me. It's located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and is California's fifth largest city with 500,000 people. The main industry here is agriculture, and the city prides itself that it is the closest city to Yosemite National Park, only 1 1/2 hours away. However, the city is out-of-step with the rest of the state. It has a very mid-western American feel to it and is considered the "Bible Belt" of California. It is very conservative and many residents want it to retain the small country town feel, even though it is a large city. This has stumped growth and many workers are unskilled immigrants, not allowing any other industries to help the economy. The city has so much potential and has grand architecture, but is decaying and it feels abandoned. I almost felt like I was on the set of "I Am Legend" while walking around. Nevertheless, enjoy the photos of the California you rarely see.

Hamilton, Ontario is a blue-collar city of over 500,000 located in the middle of the Golden Horseshoe area of Ontario. It's economy was mainly in the steel-making business and still exists today, however its economy is becoming diversified with environmental and medical research at McMaster University, one of Canada's top universities.

I came to the Motor City (again) on July 8-10 to see a concert, take in Detroit festivities, go urban exploring, visit Boston-Edison and Arden Park-East Boston neighborhoods, check out New Center and Midtown, visit the Motown Museum, see a play at an intimate theatre, among other things!



Here's part one of my phototour, taken on an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS Friday Afternoon. In fact, the weather was nice the entire weekend! God shines on Detroit when I visit, AGAIN!

The second part of my summer Detroit phototour takes me to the geographic heart of the city, Boston-Edison Historic Neighborhood. This area was once home to Detroit's prominent residents in history. The neighborhood consists of over 900 historic homes, so this tour is only a fraction of what is here. This district became listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. These pictures were taken on a gorgeous Friday afternoon in July.

The third part of my summer Detroit phototour is still in the heart of the city, in the Arden Park-East Boston Historic District, located directly to the east of the historic Boston-Edison Historic District. Albeit much smaller than Boston-Edison, with only about 100 homes, this neighborhood retains the similar architecture, grassy median and tree-lined streets that its neighbor Boston-Edison has.



The most distinctive monument in the neighborhood is the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament church, on Woodward Avenue near the gateway to the neighborhood.
