Close Up: Ben Barnes Exclusive interview

A lot has happened to Ben Barnes since we were on the Edinburgh Fringe together; The History Boys, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and the soon to be released Dorian Gray, but some things never change; he’s still as funny, friendly and charming as he was when he was starting out, writes Phil Matthews.

barnes

Ben, I’m guessing you must have caught the acting bug at school?
It actually sort of came through music, I was in the choir at school. When I was about 15 the National Youth Music Theatre came to do a workshop and asked if I’d like to come to their annual auditions which I consequently did, and ended up basically working with that company for the next six straight summers doing various productions, particularly in Edinburgh, the Opera House in Covent Garden and Bugsy Malone in the West End – that was my first proper job, I was working in the band.

What I really wanted to do was acting, but I had no idea how to go about it

Yeah you’re a talented musician I’ve heard.
I played drums in the band for that show, but there was such a wide variety of new shows as well, it was creative. You felt like you were part of the creative team and that’s what I really enjoyed. And then I sort of carried that on after school, when I went to university. My parents just threatened to disown me, basically, if I didn’t go to university. So I obviously decided not to go. I took a couple of years out to do various music projects and TV hosting, which I didn’t really enjoy because I didn’t think I was very good at it, particularly the TV presenting side of things. What I really wanted to do was acting, but I had no idea how to go about it. I’d been writing off hundreds of letters to agents and getting very curt one line replies. So I applied to university and went to Kingston where I studied Drama with English Literature. There was no theatre company at university. Obviously having had a little bit of experience already, I was part of the team who formed the first drama company there and put on the first productions. So I got into directing a lot of plays there and then acted in plays obviously, and then took them up to Edinburgh.

barnes2

What’s your memories of doing Edinburgh?
My first ever experience of the Edinburgh Festival was the one summer that I didn’t get into the NYMT. That year I went with my school theatre company and I did a play called Inside the Island which actually got five stars in the Scotsma and it was better received than the NYMT show. That was when I was 16, sleeping on floors with 10 other lads and doing that play. Then I went up with the NYMT several times.

Ben Barnes: Prince of hearts

Ben Barnes, better known as Caspian, lives in a world of red carpets and hysterical fans. He tells Alice Jones about hero-worship, Narnia, and his new role in Oscar Wilde's famous tale of narcissism

It can be hard work being a Hollywood hero. Just ask Ben Barnes, a.k.a. Prince Caspian, star of the billion-dollar-grossing Chronicles of Narnia franchise.

There's the grinding tour of world premieres ("Travelling for three months, sitting on your own in a hotel room in Taiwan, thinking, 'what am I doing here?' Just weird.") and the red-carpet appearances where your every move is greeted by an electric storm of flashbulbs ("I don't think there's any way of ever being comfortable with it. You put on a perma-grin, which is so unnatural, and the lights make you squint. I get very anxious."). There's the frankly disconcerting experience of seeing your very own toy action figurine for the first time. "My own was absolutely awful, shamefully bad. I was a bit upset by that. How many times do you get an action figure made of you? Mine looked like a cross between Adrien Brody and Javier Bardem – but ill." There's the tireless and tiresome conveyor belt of press junkets and interviews.

"They take as much out of you as filming does", sniffs Barnes. "I thought, 'it's only chatting, how hard can it be?'" As it turned out, the New York round of Prince Caspian promotion very nearly wiped this swashbuckling regent out: he did 90 interviews in one day, woke up the next with no voice and found he had to do 70 more, dosed up on a cocktail of vitamin C, honey and lemon, and Chinese potions. "I didn't really have a choice. The film was called Prince Caspian, there was no hiding." Appearing on Jay Leno's sofa was a rare highlight. "Have you seen it? It's definitely the best interview I've done..."

And then there are the fans, the prolifically letter-writing, largely female fans. Barnes spends "thousands of pounds" replying to the sacks of mail he receives each month. When he casually thanked a fan in an interview for throwing a pair of "Hello Kitty" boxer shorts at him as he arrived at Tokyo airport ("It was a bit creepy, but they were clean and I'd been travelling for three months..."), his mailbox was swiftly inundated with cutesy cartoon-cat underwear. "What part of a 27-year-old English man wants that?" he asks, incredulous. "I don't know what to do with them, they just sit there in a pile."

Not that Barnes is complaining, of course. It's just that all this fanfare and adulation has happened rather suddenly and the slight actor from Wimbledon hasn't quite caught up. "Somebody needs to give me an alternative to the word 'overwhelming'. People don't want to hear that. They want to hear that you enjoy it." Who wouldn't be overwhelmed, though, at the sight of themselves brandishing a sword on a 10-storey billboard on Sunset Boulevard? Or at being the centre of attention at the UK's largest ever film premiere, which drew 10,000 Narnia fans to the 02? Or at a head-spinning $419m in box-office receipts?

One year ago, few had heard of Barnes. He had a fleeting appearance in the Hollywood fantasy film Stardust and a West End play under his belt. Prince Caspian's casting director was in the audience for The History Boys one night and saw something in Barnes's swagger as the peacock of the class, Dakin. They called him in for an audition and a week later he had the part. He was immediately dispatched to "Narnia boot camp", where he learned to gallop, sword-fight and bellow war-cries, before a seven-month shoot in New Zealand and Prague.

Since then he has snapped up two more leading roles. First as the foppish foil to Colin Firth in Easy Virtue, Stephan Elliott's brash reworking of Noël Coward's play, and, secondly, he has just finished filming the lead role in Oliver Parker's upcoming version of The Picture of Dorian Gray with Firth (now a "close friend") and Rebecca Hall.

As if further proof that Barnes has "arrived" were needed, in March he took part in one of Vanity Fair's coveted photo-shoots, recreating West Side Story with Jennifer Lopez and a cast of hot young actors including Twilight's Robert Pattinson and High School Musical's Ashley Tisdale. It was just as fun as it looked, he says, proudly showing me a dancing scene, now the screensaver on his iPhone. "I didn't really know what was going on", he admits. "I felt like the odd one out. I think I always will a bit."

Today, arriving at his agent's office and blaming his late arrival on the Piccadilly line, Barnes doesn't really look like a star. Tall and slim and dressed in a white T-shirt, leather jacket, jeans and biker boots, he's sporting some patchy stubble and "ridiculous" long hair in preparation for the Prince Caspian: Voyage of the Dawn Treader shoot in July ("I do not want extensions again."). The only sign that Hollywood has got to him is a set of dazzlingly white, perfectly straight teeth which he flashes frequently in a smile that has charmed even the bitchy gossip-hound Perez Hilton, who frequently posts red carpet pictures of the "dreamy" actor on his showbiz blog. Not that Hilton has many occasions to do so: though a frequent flier to LA, Barnes still lives in London with his brother and prefers a night at the cinema or a gig over what he calls the "gossip-mag lifestyle". He is, though, finally coming round to the idea that he might have made it. "I've always felt there's an excuse for me getting the job, that it can't actually be my acting. With Narnia, they were running out of time and needed someone who was good with accents: I can do accents. It's happenstance: I haven't got this of my own right", he shrugs. "And then I got Easy Virtue and The Picture of Dorian Gray and couldn't come up with an excuse for them."

Barnes was born in leafy south-west London to a psychotherapist mother and a professor of psychiatry father. At King's College School, his precocious classmates included the actor Khalid Abdalla (star of The Kite Runner) and if.comedy Best Newcomer, Tom Basden. Barnes played drums in the school jazz orchestra and put on Motown nights with Lizzie (sister of Rob) Pattinson from Wimbledon High, a girls' school down the road. His first taste of performing came when he joined the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) and appeared, aged 16, in the West End in Bugsy Malone alongside other rising stars Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) and Sheridan Smith (Gavin and Stacey).

"When I finished school, everyone wanted to go to a good university and become a lawyer or a doctor. My A-levels were sort of chosen for me. The only thing I'd ever chosen for myself was the NYMT. I needed some time to think." Though his parents wanted him to go to university, Barnes took two years out, trying out singing and television presenting, and cooking up a project with the entertainment svengali Simon Fuller to open a jazz club and launch an album.

When that came to nothing, he enrolled at Kingston University to read English literature and drama – "but the only thing I wanted to do was direct plays, be in plays and take them up to Edinburgh". In what one imagines was a moment of student inebriation, he briefly joined the boyband Hyrise, who were longlisted as the UK's Eurovision entry in 2004. "We had one song and we sang it once. It was a stupid side-project for, like, a week", he sighs. "It's the worst thing I've ever done but I didn't expect anyone to ever see it." Their one performance is immortalised on YouTube.

Stardust was his break into the major league and led to Bigga Than Ben, a low-budget independent British film about two "pieces of Russian scum" trying to make a living in London, milking the system with illegal jobs, drug dealing and rent dodging. "It was shot for £200,000 over four weeks. We got the bus everywhere and got changed in phone boxes", says Barnes proudly. "The director saw Stardust on my CV and said: 'So you've just worked with De Niro?' I said yes. Didn't meet him once of course..."

It has not always been an easy ride; Barnes already has one dispute under his belt, when he left The History Boys six months into its West End run to play Caspian, annoying the National Theatre. "I'm still hugely regretful about it and I still haven't heard a peep out of them. I didn't feel like I was leaving anyone in the lurch but I did feel like I was letting people down. And I felt like I was going to vomit for three and a half weeks between getting Prince Caspian and leaving. It was always my dream to work at the National: I'd been going there with my Dad since I was 10. I'd love to round it off one day by going back. It's still the most gratifying job I've ever done."

Prince Caspian, he implies, was not quite so gratifying. "It's more to do with the contrast between the marketing and what I was asked to do. I was trying to do this awkward character who wasn't sure he wanted the responsibility of being a leader. I don't think that tested so well, so they tried to tweak him into a hero." Did they Hollywood-ise him? "Just a little. Yeah. Which is completely fair and it made a lot of money so they know what they're doing. But at the same time, as you can see by all my other choices, it's not particularly what I'm going for. I want to play characters that are interesting to watch."

Still, the blockbuster has opened doors. "People want to meet me more. It's something in people's eyes when you go into a meeting" – and Barnes is now firmly part of a powerful Brit pack of young actors cutting a dash through Hollywood, alongside Pattinson, Rupert Friend, Jim Sturgess, Dominic Cooper (who also made his name playing Dakin) and Andrew Garfield. He was recently rumoured to be lobbying hard for a lead in the massive Twilight movies. "I've never been precious about stuff. I'll ring up directors and ask them very forward questions. I don't really like the politics of it, I'd rather get involved." Next up, he's filming the Narnia sequel, and a Memento-style thriller in Boston and a British film are in the pipeline. Meanwhile, he dreams of making a film of Jesus Christ Superstar with the theatrical American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert. Is he ambitious? "I don't feel like I've got on the second rung yet, that I've got going. I don't really know who I am as an actor: the best thing would be to experiment with it for the next 30 years and never really find out."

Wisckey Park.

The Instand Review: Easy Virtue

The Instand Review: Easy Virtue

Who: In this adaptation of a Noel Coward play, Jessica Biel plays Larita, the glamorous (and blonde) new wife of John (Ben Barnes), the handsome and empty-headed scion of an aristocratic family of twits and snobs in 1920s Britain. He brings her home to the dismay of his imperious mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) but the delight of his dad (Colin Firth), a witty outsider who suffers from his war experiences and is, in the words of the screenplay, “quietly sardonic.”

What: The movie begins as a drawing room comedy of the old fashioned sort, with mother turning up her nose at this newcomer (a suspected gold-digger, as well as a vulgar American), father welcoming her, and various other friends and neighbours revealing themselves as typical fox-hunting upper crust who spend their days playing tennis and being sporty. Soon, it turns more serious, a kind of drawing room melodrama with Larita fighting for her dignity in face of the insults and hauteur of an uncaring society. Meanwhile, a series of Noel Coward and Cole Porter tunes — Mad Dogs and Englishmen, for instance, or Let’s Misbehave — are sampled and the family Chihuahua is constantly on camera for reaction shots as the family and Larita clash.

Bottom line: As directed by Stephan Elliott (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), this is a stodgy costume drama with a miscast Biel barely holding her own against a talented British cast — Firth and Scott Thomas are especially strong — and the clash of tones between wit and venom making an uncomfortable mix.

Key line: Father, at an uncomfortably quiet dinner: “Is it my imagination, or is the cutlery particularly deafening this evening?”

The verdict: A stuffy, not to say ossified, social comedy that’s worth watching mostly for the charms of Colin Firth and the performance of Scott Thomas of the mother-in-law from hell.

Finally, we've reached the Top 20!# 20 - Ben Barnes

Finally, we've reached the Top 20! All the names here are more than capable of getting a Top 10 ranking and indeed some of them have belonged to the Top 10 already the last time... As we said back then...

Almost there! These guys have it already- starring roles, amazing projects and multiple chances to work with some of the industry's cutting edge filmmakers. They are more than just 'matinee idols', they rock!

- - -

# 20 - Ben Barnes: I think Ben Barnes is one of the most promising young actors today. While I am not particularly impressed with the Narnia series, it was an important role for Barnes and it gave him the opportunity to explore acting like never before. He was quite impressive in the indie film, Bigga than Ben and I expect a lot when Dorian Gray, where he played the lead role, hits the big screen.

Brooke Barnes wrote this earlier piece describing Ben's initial foray into movies:

Barnes is a polite 26-year-old who, until Walt Disney Pictures came calling in February 2007, was struggling in all the typical ways fledgling actors struggle. Despite the splashy outdoor advertising campaign, he is in many ways still living that life. He crashed at a friend's apartment during a recent visit to Los Angeles. He has no publicist. Arriving for an interview at the Sunset Tower Hotel, he parked his rental car on the street because he was leery of leaving it with the valet. Despite being blessed with more than his share of tall, dark and handsome - and starring in a summer blockbuster - he frets that a woman he has a crush on is "utterly unattainable."

His low-key life will change no doubt with the arrival this summer of the lavish "Chronicles of Narnia" sequel. Barnes' character is the swashbuckling descendant of pirates who must battle his evil stepfather for control of the magical kingdom.

I just love some of Ben's scenes in Easy Virtue, one of his more recent films.

Get to enjoy Barnes (I was reminded of Rupert Graves in A Room With a View) in this period piece:

Barnes is on the verge of completing his portrayal of Dorian Gray, based on the horror classic written by Oscar Wilde. He was recently asked about the film, excerpt follows:

In the movie, Barnes plays a 50-year-old man living in the body of a 20-something-year-old, having maintained his youth with the help of a painting that has the magical properties to take on his natural aging process. Even though there have been many adaptations and versions of Wilde's tale, we asked Barnes if this new version was going to be a very different take on the story than we've seen in previous films and TV movies.

Exclusive: Ben Barnes Has Easy Virtue

Source: Edward Douglas

Anyone who caught Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian last year was probably impressed with the performance by 28-year-old Ben Barnes as the title character, and as is often the case when an actor or actress is introduced in such a prominent way, some might wonder where they go from there.

In
Easy Virtue, the new film from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert creators Stephan Elliot and Sheridan Jobbins based on Noel Coward's play, Barnes plays John Whittaker, a young man who brings his significantly older American wife to his parents' British countryside mansion where they're put under intense scrutiny by his deeply eccentric family. In the movie, Barnes' wife is played by the vivacious Jessica Biel, who rumor has it, so enamored Barnes that he was bringing flowers to her on their first meeting and didn't necessarily have to act to be smitten with her.

Having interviewed Barnes a number of times before, we already knew that he was more than just a pretty face, but actually a rather articulate and intelligent young man, so it was great to talk to him about something other than the Telemarine prince... although we did throw in a question or two about
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, since that's going to start shooting soon, as well as his title role in the new period thriller Dorian Gray.

ComingSoon.net: I think you might have already had this role lined up when we first met on the set of "Prince Caspian," is that right?
Ben Barnes: Not on the set I didn't. I got this after I finished, I went to L.A., and I got this while I was there. I just got an Email from Steph, "I saw you in 'Stardust,' you have to do this film, that's it." And then he wanted me to send a tape of one of the scenes, which I then did in L.A. and I sent to him and he then gave me the part. He said (puts on Aussie accent) "I never give actors parts without actually meeting them," and I was like, "Well, you just did."

CS: Were you familiar with Noel Coward's work? You went to drama school so you must have known some of it.
Barnes: I actually went to university. I did English and drama at university, which is more academic. It's more critical analysis, but I got to read a lot of plays and write essays about them, read a lot of books and poetry, and I think that's very helpful when you're reading and analyzing scripts that you're going to be involved with.

CS: And was Noel Coward one of the playwrights you read or liked?
Barnes: Not particularly. He wasn't my biggest influence, but I had seen a couple of his plays and read a few and liked them very much. "Blithe Spirit" is a tremendous premise, which has been used over and over again.

CS: Had you seen the play before seeing it on Broadway yesterday?
Barnes: I read it. It's funny even when you read it, because there's the great dramatic irony that you know that one character can hear another but they haven't worked it out yet, and it's fantastic. No one I knew of had heard of "Easy Virtue" though. I was literally ringing college professors, my old ones, saying "'Easy Virtue' - anything to say about that?" and they were like, "What? Which one?" It's this kind of claustrophobic odd play that's a little dark and it's not so much fun.

CS: Were you able to find the original play to read? I understand that it's not easy to find.
Barnes: Yeah, I read it. I found it in a compilation of Noel Coward.

CS: What did you think of what Stephan and Sheridan did with it?
Barnes: I was a huge fan of everything they did with it. They were very mischievous with it and stripped it bare. There's 20 lines left of it probably, I don't know. They kept the gems and they kept the premise and they kept the characters, but actually made all of the characters more sympathetic.

CS: What did they tell you about your character John? Did they say he was a mama's boy?
Barnes: Yeah, that was my hesitation at first. He's a mother's boy, and he's kind of weak and do I want to be seen as that guy? And I thought, "Well, people are smart. They know I'm acting." And they don't. People are not. They're like "Oh, I didn't like your character. I didn't like you in that," and I'm like, "Well, you do realize I was doing a job, which was fueling this war of wits between the women?" You have to be rooting for the couple at the beginning and by the end, you don't have to mind that (SPOILER). So actually, it was quite a difficult job for me. If you go with the story and you like the film, then you did like what I did 'cause I would have ruined it otherwise. But he's not the shiny hero character and I don't necessarily think that's important to do all the time. I'm
learning as I go that people tend to see characters more than they see the actor.

CS: Which as an actor is actually a good thing because you've sold the audience and made them believe in your character.
Barnes: Yeah, yeah, I hope so. I just think it's all in the name of fun really, this particular one. It's got some interesting subtext and things, and it seems more relevant than it probably was intended to be.

CS: Were you bummed that you didn't get to be as big a part in the comedy aspects of the story?
Barnes: There are a few dry throwaway lines which I like. I get a few laughs. It was great to be in Toronto when it came out and have that sort of festival audience enjoy it as much as they did. It's terrific to be a part of a comedy where the reaction is audible. It's visceral, it's right there in front of you, it's instant. But yeah, I'd love to do more out 'n' out funny parts at some point, but I'll have to wait until they come along. (Barnes mentioned earlier that he'd love to do an Apatow-like comedy.)

CS: We've heard the stories about you bringing Jessica flowers, but what was it like bringing in an American actor who hadn't been trained into this environment with all of these trained British actors? Was it hard getting her into that environment or did that add to her working in the role?
Barnes: I think that's just the point. That's why she came so late I think, just because it was helpful to her actually to be unprepared and it was helpful for her to be a stranger, because then when you're introduced to the family in the scene, it helps. Anything you can do to imbue yourself with that sense of... to immerse yourself in the world you're supposed to be in, to put yourself in the mood you're supposed to be in that day. Filming is so microcosmic, so about the specific moment, to be in the mood you need to be in character is so helpful.

CS: What about working with Colin Firth and the relationship you established with him? It's really interesting that the two of you are doing two movies together, practically back-to-back. What was it like the first time you met him? Were you a fan of his work?
Barnes: Absolutely. I've always thought he was very, very funny, even the silly films like the "Love Actuallys" and the "Bridget Jones" and things like that, I always thought he stole those films, because he was always so dry. I always thought this guy must be so funny in real life, but I wasn't sure... 'cause maybe he's just grumpy. And then it turns out... both! No, I just think he's a wonderful guy and so funny. Yeah, I was very happy when they cast him in "Dorian Gray" as well, because I didn't know who they were going to get for that. And they said, "What about Colin?" and I was like, "What, again?" He is that mentor-like figure.

CS: But they did ask you about casting him?
Barnes: Yeah, they did. Not that I had approval or anything. They were like, "What do you think?" and I was like "Yeah, brilliant, terrific."

CS: You should tell Colin that you had approval.
Barnes: He knows that's not true.

CS: I heard that it's going to be a very different take on "Dorian Gray," that it's not the traditional take on it.
Barnes: It's fairly traditional, I think. It's tradition in the context of trying to make a film that hasn't been seen before, because they made one in the '50s. So they have the museum version so now our job is to make one that's exciting to a 19-year-old today, as well as the book lovers.

CS: Which is interesting because "Easy Virtue" is trying to do a similar thing.
Barnes: It is, yeah. I think Coward you have a tough sell with a teenage crowd. I think "Dorian Gray," you have a better chance because it's sort of got the "Sweeney Todd" element. Also, because it's so much more adult and gory, I think that's why you've got a better shot at getting the teenagers.

CS: I was curious about that because when I heard about this, I didn't think it was really going to go for a lot of gore, but it might be tamer.
Barnes: Well, it starts off that way, it teases, but we've done all we can to make it exciting. There's a bit of horror and some cool stuff.

CS: Have you seen the final movie yet?
Barnes: No, I've seen bits. But I hope it works. It's a very tough challenge tonally, I think, but they're just getting the music just right and they're doing it right now, trimming it down a little bit, but it tested really well, so we'll see. I hope it's good. I'm most precious about that one out of all the films I've done. I want that one to work the most, because it's such a great story. I don't want to be accused of messing... We've changed a few things. We've added a character.

CS: I can't imagine it being a huge problem, because I'm not sure how many people are really aware of the original Oscar Wilde story.
Barnes: That's what I think and there'll be a few people up in arms about giving one of the lead characters a daughter and things like that, but actually, it helps serve the story and make it more visual, and that's the point of a movie. The book exists already!

CS: Of course, you're going to go shoot "Dawn Treader" very soon. Have you read a script or started training or anything for it yet? Obviously, it was pushed back six or seven months.
Barnes: Twice. It was supposed to go the January before last, that was the original plan.

CS: You've known for a long time that you were going to do the movie eventually.
Barnes: But yeah, I know nothing about it. I know as much as anyone who has read the "Dawn Treader" book. Literally, that's how much I know.

CS: Is there anything in the book you're excited about doing?
Barnes: Yeah, there's a lot of it! Obviously, I'm hoping Ramandu's daughter is hot... there's the beginning where he dives in and saves Lucy, there's all the cool stuff with the golden pond. I think the Lucy stuff, and the monopods where she goes to the Professor's room and sees her past, that'll be cool. The sea serpent and the mermaids and mermen will be cool.

CS: A lot of that stuff is visual FX though.
Barnes: It's all very fantastical though, and I think just to be a part of that will be exciting. Make it a bit younger again and more fantasy world like the first one, more kind of discovery.

CS: Have you met with Michael Apted again since the first time?
Barnes: I met him on the set of "Prince Caspian" and I met him once after that.

CS: So they've just been off doing their own thing preparing.
Barnes: Yeah, I assume they've been working hard on it. I just don't really know. I don't have any information for you, I'm afraid, because I'm in the dark myself. I WISH I was one of those people who knew everything and were still like, "I'm afraid I can't tell you." I wish I was that guy.

CS: Well, I'm assuming that it's basically the book.
Barnes: Yeah, but I'm still very intrigued and anxious about what stuff they're going to leave... because "Dawn Treader" is such an episodic book. Read a chapter and that's a kid's book, and it doesn't link together as a story. Apart from the fact they're on this voyage, but you need motivation in a film, so the way they sew it together is going to be the interesting thing.

CS: Do you have your sea legs together to be able to do a lot of stuff on water? Or are you just going to have to...
Barnes: (shaking head) Wing it. I swim a lot. I swim most days. So no, I like that.

Easy Virtue opens in select cities on Friday, May 22. Look for our interview with the creators of this adaptation sometime next week.

Легкое поведение  DVD

Easy Virtue, 2008

Ben Barnes Has Easy Virtuy

ComingSoon.net: I think you might have already had this role lined up when we first met on the set of “Prince Caspian,” is that right?
Ben Barnes: Not on the set I didn’t. I got this after I finished, I went to L.A., and I got this while I was there. I just got an Email from Steph, “I saw you in ‘Stardust,’ you have to do this film, that’s it.” And then he wanted me to send a tape of one of the scenes, which I then did in L.A. and I sent to him and he then gave me the part. He said (puts on Aussie accent) “I never give actors parts without actually meeting them,” and I was like, “Well, you just did.”

CS: Were you familiar with Noel Coward’s work? You went to drama school so you must have known some of it.
Barnes: I actually went to university. I did English and drama at university, which is more academic. It’s more critical analysis, but I got to read a lot of plays and write essays about them, read a lot of books and poetry, and I think that’s very helpful when you’re reading and analyzing scripts that you’re going to be involved with.

CS: And was Noel Coward one of the playwrights you read or liked?
Barnes: Not particularly. He wasn’t my biggest influence, but I had seen a couple of his plays and read a few and liked them very much. “Blithe Spirit” is a tremendous premise, which has been used over and over again. .

Ben Barnes Sex Tape? Perhaps!

Ben Barnes Sex Tape? Perhaps!

Ben Barnes is featured in the new actor portfolio for VMAN magazine’s summer 2009 issue #14, on stands May 14.

The 27-year-old British actor just premiered his new film, Easy Virtue, a loose adaption of a Noël Coward play, in which Ben and costars Colin Firth, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Jessica Biel find themselves caught up in a Jazz Age war of culture and class at an opulent British estate.

“I studied literature in school, and I’d read a fair amount of Coward,” notes Ben. “But I had never heard of this play. Probably because it’s so bad. I was really skeptical about taking the part until I realized that they had changed basically everything.”

Soon, he’ll shoot third Narnia installment. “Back in the saddle,” Mr. Barnes quips.

But Ben says he’s ready for roles that will take him out of costume and closer to the edge. “Maybe I can use the Internet to my advantage,” he muses. “A sex tape, perhaps?” Stay tuned.

Will Ben Barnes join ‘New Moon’ cast?

Will Ben Barnes join ‘New Moon’ cast? (10

Ben Barnes

Like Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen in the mega hit “Twilight” series by Arizona author Stephenie Meyer, Ben Barnes is another English actor. Will he be cast as Aro, one of the evil Volturi? We are certainly pulling for him and our vote selected Barnes by a big lead. The question is, will Barnes be available to work during the aggressive ‘New Moon’ film schedule?

Barnes was cast as Dorian Gray in the movie Dorian Gray. It is listed as both in production and in post-production in 2009, so he may still be involved in the film.

Many of you would like to see Barnes play the role of Aro, in 'New Moon.' He has also played Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia, John Whittaker in Easy Virtue and will play King Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The production is planned to begin by the end of this summer with the release targeted for Christmas 2010. With the aggressive shooting of 'New Moon,' would this allow time for Ben, if tapped for the role of Aro, to rehearse and appear in the movie?

Shooting around schedules is nothing new for production companies and scenes are rarely shot in the order they appear in the final movie version. Though the Volturi play an important role in the ‘Twilight’ series, their appearance in ‘New Moon’ is relatively short, so it could work. Ben currently denies rumors that he has been selected as one of the Volturi, however curiously, there is a shooting update of the 'New Moon' Italy schedule on Barne’s IMDB page. Could this be a clue?

News online indicates Summit plans to shoot the Volturi scenes for ‘New Moon’ next month in Montepulciano, Italy. According to the Italian tourism association the crew is due to film between May 25th through May 30th.
