T-Shirt Scarf Tutorial

First you need to get some t-shirts (size XL and larger are best). Old shirt, new shirt, they all work just fine for this project. Don’t worry too much if it has a small logo or picture on it, you can always trim that portion off or discard it if necessary.

First take a paper plate that is 8 – 10″ in diameter and place it on top of your shirt.

Use Paper Plate to Make Circles

Use Paper Plate as a Template for Circles

If you have a light colored shirt you could trace around the plate in pen or pencil, but since my shirt was a dark navy blue I opted to go ahead and use my rotary cutter to cut out the circle shape while the plate was still in place.

Recycled T-Shirt Projects

Cut out Circles from T-Shirt Material

Make sure you are cutting through both the front and the back of the shirt with each circle. This gives you 2 circles with one cut job. A plus in my book. Keep doing this until you have 10-14 circles of t-shirt material.

Cut As Many Circles As You Can

Once you are all done you can discard the left over t-shirt. All you’ll need now is your stack of t-shirt material circles and some scissors.

10-14 T-Shirt Circles

Now I took two circles at a time and stacked them on top of one another. I then started to cut the entire circle into a spiral that was about 1 1/2″ – 2″ wide…just like shown below. Don’t worry if it isn’t the same thickness all the way through…that won’t matter later.

Cut Circle into A Spiral Shape

Next grab each end of your new spiral and stretch the material out and it will naturally start ruffling up into a perfect ruffle. Continue this same cut into spiral and stretch process until you’ve done it to all of your circles.

Stretch Each Spiral Out So That it Ruffles

Now take all of your ruffle strips and stack them together and you’ve got a scarf! You can take an extra strip of t-shirt and tie it around the portion that would go behind your neck to secure together. I just draped the whole stack of ruffles then grabbed one ruffle and wrapped it around the wrest to create a tie right below my neck…and that worked great. Accessorize your scarf with a flower for that extra pop of color. The no sew felt flowers I made earlier this week are great for that!
