Donald Trump campaign resumes in-person fundraisers in June. What COVID-19?

Пятница, 30 Мая 2020 г. 01:56 (ссылка)

• One Trump fundraising event in Dallas next month has a price tag of $580,600 per couple.

Impeached president Donald Trump is scheduled to headline in-person fundraisers as early as June, which would be his first since the coronavirus outbreak stopped campaign events in March.

Alex Isenstadt at Politico was first to break the news late on Friday.

“Trump plans to headline a gathering at a private home in Dallas on June 11, and an outdoor event at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., on June 13,” reports Michelle Ye Hee Lee at the Washington Post:

Both events will be geared toward wealthy donors, charging $580,600 per couple for the Dallas event and $250,000 per person for the New Jersey event. The money will go to Trump Victory, a committee that raises money for the Trump campaign, the Republican Party and 22 state parties.

Party officials said they plan to take safety measures to ensure the health of the president and attendees. About 25 people are expected to attend each event, which is a smaller gathering than many other Trump Victory fundraisers. The events were first reported Friday by Politico.

The White House Medical Unit and U.S. Secret Service will evaluate all attendees to decide whether they can attend the event, according to a party official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss security measures.

Impeached President Donald Trump announced on a Friday afternoon in the middle of a pandemic that has killed more than 100,000 that he is terminating the relationship between the United States and the World Health Organization.

Nor did medical professionals on Twitter, like Jeremy Konyndyk of the Center for Global Development and Georgetown University.

The bottom line is that none of this is about WHO's performance. It's purely about deflecting accountability for 100k dead Americans, and counting, on Trump's watch. I dove into the merits along with @TomBollyky here: https://t.co/4dNEgob7iU

Trump gives himself 'great reviews' on 'The Chinese Virus' on Memorial Day

Понедельник, 26 Мая 2020 г. 01:26 (ссылка)

The cruelty is the point.

Impeached and manifestly unfit president Donald Trump spent Memorial Day 2020 doing what he does every other day. Tweeting disinformation about the coronavirus pandemic that has killed nearly 100,000 Americans and shows no sign of stopping, despite Trump's repeated lies.

“Great reviews on our handling of Covid 19, sometimes referred to as the China Virus,” tweeted Trump on Monday, May 25, 2020.

“Ventilators, Testing, Medical Supply Distribution, we made a lot of Governors look very good - And got no credit for so doing. Most importantly, we helped a lot of great people!”

There is no bottom.

This one from Trump last night sounded better in the original Russian, as noted by the experts:

Schools in our country should be opened ASAP. Much very good information now available. @SteveHiltonx @FoxNews

WHO warns 'immediate second peak' of coronavirus threatens countries that reopen too soon

Понедельник, 25 Мая 2020 г. 22:08 (ссылка)

The World Health Organization said on Monday that parts of the world where coronavirus infection rates are declining may face an “immediate second peak” if they prematurely loosen restrictions to slow the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.

From Reuters:

The world is still in the middle of the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak, WHO emergencies head Dr Mike Ryan told an online briefing, noting that while cases are declining in many countries they are still increasing in Central and South America, South Asia and Africa.

Ryan said epidemics often come in waves, which means that outbreaks could come back later this year in places where the first wave has subsided. There was also a chance that infection rates could rise again more quickly if measures to halt the first wave were lifted too soon.

“When we speak about a second wave classically what we often mean is there will be a first wave of the disease by itself, and then it recurs months later. And that may be a reality for many countries in a number of months’ time,” Ryan said.

“But we need also to be cognizant of the fact that the disease can jump up at any time. We cannot make assumptions that just because the disease is on the way down now it is going to keep going down and we are get a number of months to get ready for a second wave. We may get a second peak in this wave.

Now that driving is down, so are organ transplants

Суббота, 23 Мая 2020 г. 17:00 (ссылка)

From NPR:

Deaths from motor vehicle crashes and fatal injuries are the biggest source of organs for transplant, accounting for 33% of donations, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing, which manages the nation's organ transplant system.

But ever since the coronavirus forced Californians indoors, those accidents have declined. Traffic collisions and fatalities in the state dropped by half in the first three weeks of shelter-in-place restrictions, according to a study by the University of California, Davis. Drowning deaths dropped 80% in California, according to data compiled by the nonprofit Stop Drowning Now.

From March 8 to April 11, the number of organ donors who died in traffic collisions was down 23% nationwide compared with the same period last year, while donors who died in all other types of accidents were down 21%, according to data from UNOS.

Well this is awkward.

Wonder why Donald Trump is 6 months late on his annual physical?

Пятница, 22 Мая 2020 г. 23:44 (ссылка)

It's curious, isn't it. It's now 6 months after impeached President Donald Trump said he was starting his 2020 physical.

He hasn't completed the routine medical examination he said he started in November.

The White House won't say why.

I wonder why.

In November 2019, exactly six months ago this week, Trump began what the White House at the time described as “portions” of his third physical during a two-hour examination, report Geoff Bennett and Monica Alba at NBC News:

Senior administration officials did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment about the delay — despite Trump announcing this week he was taking an unproven and potentially dangerous drug after being exposed to an aide who tested positive for coronavirus.

Asked in early March about when he would complete his physical, the president told reporters, “I’m going probably over the next 90 days. I’m so busy, I can’t do it.”

A month later, as the coronavirus pandemic hospitalized UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Trump said he would finish the exam “at the appropriate time” adding, “but I feel very good.”

A president’s annual physical typically occurs at the beginning of a new year. Trump’s 2019 exam was conducted in February, and his 2018 physical was conducted in January. It is uncommon for a president to complete a routine physical exam months apart and in multiple stages.

I'm sure it's a very cool and normal. A perfect physical. Great.

Irish beekeeper's Covid Lego Beehive is fully functional, and houses 30,000 bees

Пятница, 22 Мая 2020 г. 04:50 (ссылка)

Ruairi O Leoch'ain of Athlone Wildlife Apiaries decided to make a lego beehive "just for a bit of craic"

A beekeeper in Ireland put their coronavirus quarantine time to good use by crafting an elaborate, fully functioning beehive out of LEGOs.

Here's the original story published by Westmeath Independent:

A beehive which an Athlone schoolteacher and wildlife activist made out of lego has been creating a real buzz since video footage of it was shared online in recent days.

Ruairi O Leoch'ain of Athlone Wildlife Apiaries decided to make a lego beehive "just for a bit of craic", but a video clip he shared of the bees in their colourful new home has been hugely popular and is about to surpass 100,000 views on Facebook.

"To be honest, I wasn't expecting such a big reaction," he said.

"I have had people getting in touch with me from China, America, and elsewhere saying that they love the idea."

North Dakota's COVID-19 contact tracing app leaks location data to Foursquare and a Google Ads ID: Report

Пятница, 22 Мая 2020 г. 04:41 (ссылка)

Your concerns about the privacy and security risks of using state-run coronavirus contact tracing apps? They're reasonable concerns.

This new report from mobile privacy firm Jumbo Privacy says the official North Dakota contact-tracing app is sharing location data with Foursquare and an advertising ID with Google.

Writes Steven Melendez for Fast Company:

The app, called Care19, and produced by a company called ProudCrowd that also makes a location-based social networking app for North Dakota State sports fans, generates a random ID number for each person who uses it. Then, it can “anonymously cache the individual’s locations throughout the day,” storing information about where people spent at least 10 minutes at a time, according to the state website. If users test positive for the coronavirus, they can provide that information to the North Dakota Department of Health for contact-tracing purposes so that other people who spent time near virus patients can potentially be notified.

According to the app’s privacy policy, “location data is private to you and is stored securely on ProudCrowd, LLC servers” and won’t be shared with third parties “unless you consent or ProudCrowd is compelled under federal regulations.”

But according to the Jumbo report, the app sends the random ID number, along with a phone ID used for advertising purposes and apparent latitudes and longitudes of places visited by the user, to Foursquare, a leading location-data provider. The app also sends the random ID to servers run by Bugfender, a Barcelona-based service used by app makers to track and diagnose software malfunctions, according to Jumbo, which monitored internet traffic generated by the app.
