The most common application of polyurethane is as solid foams, which requires the presence of a gas, or blowing agent, during the polymerization step. This is commonly achieved by adding small amounts of water, which reacts with isocyanates to form CO2 gas and an amine, via an unstable carbamic acid group. The amine produced can also react with isocyanates to form urea groups, and as such the polymer will contain both these and urethane linkers. The urea is not very soluble in the reaction mixture and tends to form separate "hard segment" phases consisting mostly of polyurea.
In the presented work to the synthesis of polyurethanes was used tri-functional polyether polyol based on the oxypropylated glycerol. Mentioned polyol has trade name Rokopol G1000 and is produced by PCC Rokita in Poland. This polyol can be used as a component for the synthesis of polyurethane elastomers, single spray foam, coatings, adhesives, impregnates and varnishes. The presence of three primary hydroxyl groups permits to obtain chemical cross-linked polyurethanes. The polyester polyols imparted good mechanical properties to the PUs but poor resistance to hydrolytic degradation . In order to balance the hydrolytic degradation and the mechanical properties of the PUs, different blends of polyols of the same nature with different molecular weights or polyols of different nature have been used.

The North American market struggled to find balance during Q1 2021, due to winter cold spells faced across the US gulf coast leading to several plant turnarounds. The prices of several polymers and feedstock chemicals were rising due to affected production during the period. Plants of several Polyol producers including DOW and Covestro remained idled during mid of January to end of February. The type of foam produced can be controlled by regulating the amount of blowing agent and also by the addition of various surfactants which change the rheology of the polymerising mixture. Foams can be either "closed-cell", where most of the original bubbles or cells remain intact, or "open-cell", where the bubbles have broken but the edges of the bubbles are stiff enough to retain their shape, in extreme cases reticulated foams can be formed. Open-cell foams feel soft and allow air to flow through, so they are comfortable when used in seat cushions or mattresses.

However, as the content of the hard segments increased, the tensile strength tended to increase and then decrease, and as the fluorine content increased, the heat loss peak of the FPU shifted towards higher temperatures. However, the fluorinated groups of the FPU synthesized in the above method exist in the main chain of the FPU. All CD + PE blends show five contributions to the carbonyl region ; the one at 1675–1689 cm−1 is ascribed to hydroxyl–carbonate interactions. The wavenumber at which each contribution appears varies depending on the amount of PE in the blend ; this evidences the existence of different interactions in CD + PE blends with respect to the parent polyols.
