New problems - occasionally surgery on the hand, if extensive, can cause other problems such as trigger finger (5-32%). On the day of surgery, you will be admitted by a nurse who will check your details, medications and skin tags removal leeds past medical conditions and put a wrist band with your details on the arm we are not operating on . In mild cases it comes on when the wrist is held bent in one direction for a long period of time or at night time. This may also be amenable to surgical decompression although that procedure requires an anaesthetic block to numb the whole arm. You would still go home on the same day and follow up is the same as that for carpal tunnel decompression. We will see you in clinic to assess for the presence of carpal tunnel syndrome and to rule out other possible causes for your symptoms. In some circumstances nerve conduction tests or scans will be required and we can organise these.
Put the palms of your hands together, with your fingers pointing upwards. Keeping your fingers together gently lift your elbows out to the side until you feel the stretch over the front of your wrists. If you are diabetic, you will reduce your risk of infection and poor wound healing by keeping your blood sugars stable. Please attend all dressing, doctor and hand therapy appointments after surgery. You must follow the hand exercises that you have been given to get the best function and recovery following surgery. If your described symptoms suggest you may have carpal tunnel syndrome, your doctor will do a physical exam, palpating your forearm in various ways to see if that causes you to experience neuropathies. To confirm a diagnosis, a specialized electrodiagnostic test called electromyelography and/or soft tissue radiological imaging may be ordered. The most common affects are neuropathies and pain in wrist, hand and/or fingers. Your carpal tunnel surgery will most likely be performed under local anaesthetic so you’ll be awake. Most people have carpal tunnel surgery without complications but all surgery carries some risks. The ligament runs across the top of your wrist bones and creates a narrow channel in your wrist. This channel is called the carpal tunnel and inside it are tendons and the median nerve, which controls some of the movement in your hand. If conservative treatment for your carpal tunnel syndrome is not successful your surgeon may recommend carpal tunnel release.

You can expect to return to your usual activities after a month and be fully recovered after three months. If you start experiencing scar pain or stiffness after your surgery then you may need to visit a physiotherapist. Splinting the wrist at night helps many patients, if this is effective no further treatment may be necessary. Some patients may choose to live with the pins and needles and decide not to have an operation. In mild cases of CTS, Ibuprofen or similar drugs can provide some short-term relief from symptoms. Nerve symptoms may be relieved by specific nerve painkillers from your GP however some patients find the side-effects of these problematic. The operation is meant to relieve the pressure of the nerve and by doing so, you should get improvement in the pins and needles in the fingers. Yes, it is possible to have carpal tunnel release surgery in both hands at the same time. However, in most cases, patients prefer to address the problem in one hand at a time. Endoscopic carpal tunnel release requires more specialized instruments and experience with the procedure is important to minimize risk of complications. In some cases, endoscopic release may not be possible because of difficulties with visualization and individual anatomic variations. Studies have shown improved outcomes, fewer complications, and lower rate of conversion to open surgery when endoscopic surgery is performed by more experienced, higher volume surgeons. The advantages of endoscopic surgery include less pain, faster recovery, and earlier return to work and sports. I am a plastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon and became a consultant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2017. My areas of special interest are children's hand surgery and major nerve injury, in addition to general plastic and hand surgery. During the operation we release the carpal tunnel to provide more space for the median nerve. This is performed through a small incision in the palm, under local or regional anaesthesia. Local anaesthetic is injected directly into the palm and regional anaesthetic is given as an injection into the arm by the anaesthetist. If treatment is required, stretching exercises and a wrist brace to keep the wrist straight at night over a period of several months would usually be tried first. With more severe symptoms, steroid injections or surgery may be needed. It occurs when there is increased pressure on the median nerve at the carpal tunnel. This pressure is frequently caused when the wrist is bent upward or downward for prolonged periods of time, such as while using a keyboard, mouse or other device. Symptoms get worse when there is increased pressure in the carpal tunnel.
