Merengue Started from the Dominican Republic. It's the national dance of the Dominican. There are a few stories describing how the dance originated. The most usual one is that of the slaves that were chained together and had to move by dragging a foot at one time. Merengue as a two beat audio and since the footwork is quite much like walking, it is a really simple dance to learn.

Music:

Merengue is here played 2/4. The double sided drum is played on one side with a rod with a potent syncopation to indicate the beats. Saxophones and guitars can also be rather popular tools found from the music.

Dance:

Merengue footwork is extremely easy to learn since it is a simple two beat movement ("left, right") using your body weight being moved between your legs. The upper body remains fairly straight while the hips move with the fat modification. The Merengue frame is quite a bit smaller (closer) in comparison to Salsa. Having said this, Merengue is often led with a single (right) hand over the trunk. However, in open hold, arms are often completely extended out as an alternative of keeping a closer l shaped frame.

Meregue is a very popular Latin American Dance in New Zealand, second only to Salsa. On an average night outside in a Latin Club, as numerous as every second or third song may be Merengue.
