Umbrellas "Umbrellas" [2005]
Emo has become such a degrading thing to say about a band that some of my friends who still listen to music of this style refuse to call it that. They say power-pop, pop-punk, pop-rock, or just about anything but the originally coined name, which has become popularized, is no longer trendy, and who knows what else.

For me, bands that fall under the emo tag have collectively been stuck in the mud since the genres conception. I would even say that the style peaked during the days of early Weezer. Many such bands of the last five years have been either too brash or too delicate, and all seemed to carbon paper copy each other at every turn. By the beginning of 2005 it all seemed to be drowning in quicksand together; everybody and his brother wanted to be in an emo band. After all, it was just regular people with deeply-felt troubles of the heart why couldnt anyone do it?

Though some say that more esoteric acts like Gatsbys American Dream are leading the way, and others swore by the glossy pop of Mae, for me, Umbrellas is the band that dusted off this maligned and abused genre and forced it into maturity. Their debut self-titled release is a collection of songs so finely crafted and emotionally resonant that it makes its distant cousins look hideous and cloying by comparison. They establish their own genre as one worthy of respect, requiring real musicianship to excel at. Though it comes on the heels of a few very encouraging anomalies (the example that comes to mind is Saosins Seven Years), this debut is too solid to be a fluke.
