„Wind Of Change“ in Manaus

Live against wood clearing

With the biggest rock concert in the history of the Amazonian jungle the German band Scorpions has contributed their share for the protection of the “green lung” of the earth. Along the lines of “Stopped the wood clearing! Without Amazonian no future!” the musicians around singer Klaus Meine enthused more than 30000 people, who came together in Manaus, on Thursday night. “The people were crazy, they never saw something like this before”, wonders Daniela Montalto from the environment protection group Greenpeace Brazil.
The concert was over only after two and a half hours at 3am. For the start of their South America tour Scorpions support with this a Greenpeace campaign for the protection of the biggest jungle area of the earth. More times the musicians stopped their show and the recording of the DVDs “Scorpions live in Manaus” to signalize the meaning of the jungle for the planet.
“We just missed a show at Amazonian to make our career quasi complete” explained the musicians, who became known worldwide with their rock ballads and riffs like no other German band, before the show. The Brazil rain forest is a symbol of the life on the planet, explains the 59 years old rock singer from Hanover. With this concert they wanted to wake up the people that also the last people realize how important ecology is.
“The time in case of rain forest protection expires”, Greenpeace warn meanwhile. Nearly 1000 endangered plants- and animal species are in the Amazonian jungle this time. 700000 square kilometer jungle area got ruined in the last 40 years – that corresponds two times the area of Germany. With this Amazonian have lost 17 percent of the original area. Researchers assume that the Amazonian rain forest will change into a steppe when more than 40 percent is ruined.
