Taylor Lautner, who turned 17 on the 11th of February this year, loves being an actor and he started acting after primary school. He has the black, messy hair of a teenager, with high cheekbones, and somatic types of Native American blood, from Ottowa and Potawatomi, and also Mitchigan. It’s important for him to note that on his father’s side he is German-Hungarian.
Before Taylor became an idol for all the girls around the world, he followed step by step in the classic "climbing" of Hollywood, starting with cereal commercials, small roles on TV shows (e.g. The Bernie Mac Show, My Wife & Kids) that attracted studios.
Taylor explains, "I've always been in love with sports. When I was a child I did everything—baseball, football, karate and athletics. Growing up I realized that if I wanted to have success in my life, I had to focus on two or three activities. That's when I kept on practicing karate, becoming a black belt at eleven years old and winning three Junior World Championships at twelve. Football is my favorite sport, but also dance, hip-hop and breakdancing, Being in the LA Hip Kids took me on stages around different cities. That's how I learned to win my first problem with an audience.”
Taylor’s karate teacher persuaded him to go to his first casting audition as an adult. He continues, "At the beginning I thought it wasn't something for me, and I was too focused on a sports career. Since I was in Los Angeles often to train with my coach for tournaments, I decided to try. That audition was my lucky one because they immediately picked me for a commercial. It was love at first sight, and I fell in love with the set's atmosphere, all the aspects of the production and also the troupe's professionalism. When I came back home, my family pushed me again. When they approved of my choice, we moved to LA to continue this adventure."
His first movie role was the Disney movie "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl," directed by Robert Rodriguez, who was also directing "Sin City" at the time. Taylor explains, "At thirteen years old, I loved Robert specifically as the author and director of the "Spy Kids" movies, and I heard that he loved to work with children. Aside from being a video game addict, he was dynamic, full of ideas and energy. The cue for the movie came to his son Racer that I met during the audition. I want to thank [Rodriguez] because he gave me the chance to do all my stunts, especially the karate ones, fruits of years of training that I finally showed everyone.”
Then came a part in "Cheaper By the Dozen" with Steve Martin. Martin is Taylor’s favorite comic actor. He reveals, "I’ve always liked him, but after I met him I realized he is a professional, a true inspiration to someone like me, who is just starting in the industry. I think being a great actor means that you can explore different ways of life, become someone else even if it’s just for a month, explore my imagination and learn what isn’t in a school’s curriculum."
After a short while, Taylor got a call from his agent. It’s "the call that will change your life." Taylor remembers, "A few days before my sixteenth birthday, I had the audition for ‘Twilight,’ with Catherine Hardwicke, who I admired for ‘Lords of Dogtown.’ I didn't know anything about the book, but from the first time I met her I had hoped to get the part because I wanted to work with her so bad. Then they called me back for a chemistry reading with Kristen Stewart to see if we would fit together on the screen, and we immediately got along. Luckily two weeks later they called me back and picked me. After I got the part, I did research, read different books on the subject and I immediately understood what could happen to me, even though I never expected such a big success and warmth from the fans. I even met women who wanted me to autograph their underwear, I mean each one of us was surprised."
Despite the success, Taylor risked losing the part in the "Twilight" sequel "New Moon," directed by Chris Weitz (coming out on the 20th of November), because his character Jacob Black is huge. Taylor explains, "After I finished the first movie, and after I read all the books, I realized that if I wanted to keep my part in the cast I had to change my diet, my build and get a lot of muscle. I worked out five days a week with weights, stopped athletics because with that it’s impossible to gain weight. My coach even put me on the Michael Phelps's diet, which makes you eat every two hours. It was so difficult to grow stronger in that way, especially because it requires a lot of nutrients. But finally thanks to the gym and protein shakes, I made it. And I had to change my entire wardrobe, even my favorite jackets."
If you Google Taylor you'll find hundreds of links, blogs, and websites that talk about him. Taylor reveals, "I love to dress well, even if my outfit is comfortable. I love Cohesive's polos. I love leather jackets. I just got my license, I drive a BMW and I prefer to play football with my friends, even when they laugh at me because I show up in white shirt, and then spend hours chatting on Facebook. Another passion? I love meat, and not only on the big screen. I love steaks, especially t-bones!"
As a good wolf the young actor is a Michigan Wolverines supporter. He admits to having a crush on Jessica Alba, loves the "Bourne Identity" trilogy and he would love to work with Matt Damon, Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott. Two of his favorite movies are "Braveheart" and "Iron Man." Taylor continues, "I'm a U2 fan, and I'll see them live this autumn in Vancouver while I'll be on the "Eclipse" set, the third movie of the Twilight Saga. But if I have to dance I prefer the Black Eyed Peas. And if you want I will also tell you that I'm so sorry that I haven’t come to Italy yet. I also asked Stephanie Meyer to add a little chapter at the end of the first book so I could come over there, but she didn't want to."
