November 5, 2006: Big goals ahead for Janne Ahonen
photo: J. Ahonen Finland's Janne Ahonen is pretty optimistic when he looks ahead to the upcoming World-Cup season. “There is nothing to worry about”, he said to the German website skispringen.com. He also told that he likes to jump in Sapporo (JPN) where the World-Championships will be held next February. But Ahonen also mentioned that he hopes the wind conditions will not play a decisive role there. Another big goal for the 29-year-old is to win the Four-Hills-Tournament. If he can accomplish that, he will be only jumper who could win this prestigous event five times in its 53 year long history. Right now he holds this record together with Jens Weissflog, who could also win the Tournament four times. Last season Janne Ahonen was second best in the overall World-Cup. This was already his sixth podium place in this ranking. Some Finnish jumpers went to Kuusamo last Friday to start their snow preparation. “I am ready and can't wait to start jumping”, B-team member Kimmo Yliriesto told ski-jumping.net last week. Before the season kicks-off in Ruka in three weeks the team will have three test competitions in Rovaniemi, Kuusamo and Vuokatti (national K 90 championships) where the athletes can qualify for the first world-cup competitions.
Junior World-Champion Gregor Schlierenzauer from Austria won his first competition on the World-Cup level today in Courchevel (FRA). With jumps of 123.5 m and the new hill record of 134.5 m for a total of 255.4 points he edged out his teammate Wolfgang Loitzl who landed on the second place with 242.4 points (120.5 m/125m). Poland's Adam Malysz was third with 237.1 points and jumps of 117 m and 127.5 m. Young Norwegian Anders Jacobsen showed his talent again today and achieved his best career result with a very good fourth place, closely followed by his compatriot Olympic-Champion Lars Bystøl. Jacobsen is also the "Man of the Day" of today's event. Austrian Andreas Kofler came in sixth this evening and this was enough for him to win the first edition of the 4-Nations Grand Prix and old ingots worth about SFR 12 000. Second in this overall ranking of the first four individual competitions of the summer is Adam Malysz and third Gregor Schlierenzauer, who lost his chances to win when he fell in the first jump in Predazzo. There is a break now in the summer series of about two weeks and the next event will take place in Zakopane (POL) on August 26. The COC continues already next weekend with two competitions in Lillehammer (NOR). Detailed results >>
Austria's Andreas Kofler won the Grand-Prix in Einsiedeln (SUI) this evening under, especially in the first round, a bit changing tail-wind conditions. The 22-year-old, who was already in the lead after the first round, showed jumps of 108 m and 110 m for 248.4 points. The second place went to his young teammate Gregor Schlierenzauer with 243.9 points and 106 m and 112 m (longest jump of the day). Local-hero Simon Ammann was the third to land on the podium with a total of 238.7 points (106m/108m). Wolfgang Loitzl (107m/106m; 237.9pts.) as fourth completed the great result of the Austrian team. Adam Malysz (POL) came in fifth today and lost the lead in the overall Summer Grand-Prix ranking to Kofler. With three athletes, namely Anders Bardal, Lars Bystøl and Roar Ljøkelsøy, in the Top 10, the Norwegians presented themself in a much better shape then in Hinterzarten. Young Austrian Mario Innauer, the son of Toni Innauer, had a good debut today with the 18th place. Yong-Jik Choi finished 30th and could score the first points for his team this summer. Swiss Andreas Küttel, whowas obviously very motivated to achieve a good result on his home-hill jumped only 98 m and could not make it to the final. Jakub Janda (97.5m), Björn Einar Romøren (100m) and Tommy Ingebrigtsen (92m) also didn't advance to the secound round. Detailed results >>

On the hill in Predazzo where he captured the World-Championship title a couple of years ago Adam Malysz also won the Grand-Prix competition this evening. The Polish idol showed jumps of 128.5 m and 129 m and scored a total of 265.5 points. With that he could relegate Swiss Andreas Küttel, who jumped 126 m and 128.5 m for 262.6 points, to the second place. After he had missed the final in Hinterzarten, Jakub Janda (CZE) could improve his performance a lot today and finished third with 254.7 points (125.5m/126m). He also got the extra € 1000 for being the "Man of the Day". 4-time World-Champion Martin Schmitt (GER) achieved 249.9 points and showed that he might be on his way back to the top with a very good fifth place today. 21-year-old David Lazzaroni from France also had a very good competition and could achieve a Top 10 result as 9th. In absence of the teams from Norway and Finland also athletes like Andrea Morassi (13.), Sebastian Colloredo (19.) and Martin Mesik (24.) had good jumps and scored valueable points. Austria's Andreas Widhölzl still has some problems and could not advance to the final. It was also not a great day for his young teammate Gregor Schlierenzauer. A fall in the first round made a top result impossible. Detailed results >>
Germany's Georg Späth won his first Grand-Prix competition ever this afternoon in Hinterzarten. In this close event on the HS 108 the 25-year-old showed jumps of 107.5 m and 103 m and reached a total of 275.0 points. The leader after the first round, Andreas Kofler from Austria ended up second with 270.5 points (108m/100.5m). The third best today also came from Austria with Gregor Schlierenzauer. The junior World-Champion posted two very good and constant jumps of 102.5 m and 102 m for 258.5 points. Swiss Simon Amman, who had the longest jump in today's trial round (108m) came in fourth, followed by young Finn Harri Olli and Adam Malysz. A good performance today was also shown by Norwegian Anders Jacobsen who finished 8th and was the best placed athlete of his team that will now leave out the next competitions and instead train in Oberstdorf (GER) next week. Well known names like last winter's overall World-Cup winner Jakub Janda, Martin Koch, Sigurd Pettersen and Martin Schmitt failed to make the second round cut. The competition took place in front of about 5000 spectators under a bit changing but fair conditions. Winner Georg Späth was also awarded with the prize-money of € 1000 for the "Man of the day". He showed, like his teammates, that he is in a very good shape already this summer. In opposite to the Norwegian team of head-coach Mika Kojonkoski in which Tom Hilde and Anders Jacobsen got the chance to show their talent after good training performances yesterday. The two youngsters and Lars Bystøl and Roar Ljøkelsøy came in only on place seven beaten also by the teams from the Czech Republic, Poland and Russia. After a very dissapointing last winter the Slovenian team, with the new head-coach Vasja Bajc, is also not in a good shape yet and finished 8th.
