We're All Friends Here

Blue may have been the warmest color at the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, with everyone from Mindy Kaling, Jennifer Garner, and Claire Danes to Oprah Winfrey, Amy Adams, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus wearing elegant—albeit expected—midnight or cobalt gowns. But the ladies in pink were the ones who stole the spotlight. "I just loved it," said a glowing Kerry Washington. She was referring to her custom Prada ensemble: a shocking pink, belly-baring crop top paired with a high-waisted black skirt. "I mean, I don't really have anything to hide anymore, so I'm having a little fun tonight," the pregnant Scandal star added. In an outfit like that, it would be hard not to, even if she did lose the best-actress award in the TV-drama category to Downton Abbey's Maggie Smith. Cate Blanchett, who followed up last weekend's Golden Globes win by taking home tonight's best-film-actress statuette, also sparkled in rose—literally. Her fluid Givenchy halter gown was trimmed in punchy fuchsia sequins.

Considering they were among their peers, the evening's stars were laid-back while walking the SAG red carpet. Best-supporting-actor winner Jared Leto, for instance, shamelessly flirted with Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke, despite the fact that his date—mother Constance Leto—was in tow. Emma Thompson brilliantly ditched the heels that caused her so much grief last Sunday for a pair of gilded Louboutin flats (her vintage 1930s gown was an equally genius decision). Spunky and glam in a black sequined Dior column, the ever-unfiltered Jennifer Lawrence openly complained about the "armpit vaginas" caused by her look's strapless bodice. And after nearly being crushed by a sea of fans that fell over a barricade, Julia Roberts strutted in a bold but questionable plunging Valentino jumpsuit. Perhaps it was an ode to the American Hustle cast, who took home the ceremony's top honor.

Of course, we can't discuss the SAG Awards without mentioning the rising fashion obsession, Lupita Nyong'o. While the best-supporting-actress winner was, technically, a member of the aforementioned blue crew, her custom electric cerulean Gucci gown, with its figure-hugging silhouette and intricate floral-embellished straps, was anything but ordinary. During her red carpet interview, the starlet mentioned that, upon her arrival, she'd met Blanchett for the first time. "She's really a big deal in my life. I really look up to her," Nyong'o offered. With the acting and sartorial chops she's displayed thus far, we'd say she and her role model have a lot in common.

You Gotta Have Heart

Среда, 15 Января 2014 г. 09:00 + в цитатник

Some in Hollywood were still nursing Golden Globe hangovers, but Tuesday night was a big one for parties in L.A. First up was cocktails and dinner at Chanel's Robertson Boulevard store, where the French house was celebrating the release of Drew Barrymore's new book, Find It in Everything. A collection of images taken over 20 years (and curated down from 30,000), the photos spot hearts in the everyday. "The heart shape is so positive and devoid of negativity and not mistakable like a lot of things in life," Barrymore told Style.com. The pregnant star was as sunny as ever, talking animatedly with pals like Molly Shannon and Chelsea Handler. "I like that now something that was so personal to me can be about other people," she added. Reese Witherspoon, Busy Philipps, and Jennifer Meyer joined her for an alfresco meal later in the evening.

A bit farther west, Tory Burch welcomed fans including Brooklyn Decker and Jessica Alba to her new Rodeo Drive flagship. Burch's second outpost in Los Angeles, the bi-level place was outfitted with all things TB, including a special Rodeo Drive capsule collection that Burch designed with the flowers of Southern California and old Hollywood glamour in mind. "I just love that she's such a girl's girl," Isla Fisher said, admitting that she's not one for store openings but was happy to make an exception this time. A huge fashion fan, Hailee Steinfeld walked wide-eyed into the new boutique. "When you have designers like Tory who are trying new things, you want to take a risk alongside them," she said of how the designer has impacted her red-carpet MO. "And you want to see what kind of response you're going to get."

On an L.A. weekend with an event around every corner, Diane von Furstenberg stole the spotlight with Friday's opening celebration of her new exhibit, Journey of a Dress. Guests like Uma Thurman, Tobey Maguire, and Demi Moore mingled among the 200 dresses in nearly 20,000 square feet of exhibition space. "Everyone knows why they're here," said Coco Rocha, who, alongside Andy Cohen, was providing live red-carpet coverage. "Everyone has a story about their first wrap dress."

Along with the legion of mannequins donning decades of the designer's iconic dresses, Von Furstenberg's likeness was everywhere you looked, from those famous Warhols to playful illustrations by Antonio Lopez, Ruben Toledo, and Konstantin Kakanias. A Ghost May Come, a new work by Dustin Yellin that features the body of a wrap dress suspended in glass, greeted partygoers upon entering. After posing for photos, Von Furstenberg made her way to the back room, reimagined in the disco decor of Studio 54. "Diane pioneered this movement," said Robin Wright, who was wearing a wrap dress of her own. "She made the most practical, pragmatic, sexy dress for every woman, no matter what their shape or size. No wonder she's going 40 years strong!"

On Saturday, it was Sean Penn's third annual Help Haiti Home event, in partnership with Giorgio Armani and benefitting Penn's earthquake relief charity J/P HRO, which drew Hollywood's big names—Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Hemsworth, and Idris Elba included. "The glorious and resilient Haiti is the country we are blessed to have as our neighbor," Penn told the crowd. "Help us finish the job."

After his impassioned speech, the live auction heated up. Chris Martin bid against Charlize Theron for a brand-new Banksy, made by the artist specially for the event, while Piers Morgan and Anderson Cooper vied for a commissioned work by Jeff Koons, featuring Penn's collection of decommissioned guns. Cooper eventually won. At the end of the night, U2 took to the stage for a surprise set. Bono kicked it off: "It's been a while since U2 played a hotel lounge."

Blue Is the Warmest Color

Воскресенье, 12 Января 2014 г. 09:00 + в цитатник

"Tina and Amy are gonna crush it." We heard that twice on the red carpet before the 71st Annual Golden Globes ceremony got rolling tonight. Fey and Poehler were as sharp as they were last year, zinging their best jokes in the direction of Hollywood's leading men and the industry's double standards. On Gravity: "It's a story about how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age." On Dallas Buyers Club: "Matthew McConaughey was great. He lost 45 pounds, or what actresses call 'being in a movie.'"

That's as good a transition as any to talk about the evening's dresses, which were a step above the ones we saw at this show last year. Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama winner Cate Blanchett takes this writer's best-dressed award for her black lace Armani Privé; it'll be a more exciting awards season for red-carpet watchers because she's in it. But that's not to say the Blue Jasmine star didn't have any competition. Girls' Allison Williams still qualifies as a newcomer, but her feathered and striped Alexander McQueen column was as sophisticated as anything on the red carpet.

Red was hands down the color of choice on a night that saw more colorful dresses than usual. Amy Adams' two-tone Valentino Haute Couture gown and matching cape looked plucked from the wardrobe department of American Hustle. "I was kind of influenced by my character," the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy winner admitted before the show. The black pants Emma Watson wore under her backless red Dior Haute Couture dress had their fair share of Twitter detractors, but we think the look suited the young actress. Julia Louis-Dreyfus looked smashing in her Narciso Rodriguez, notwithstanding the hot dog she was stuffing in her face while gamely playing along with Fey and Poehler. And we were very happy to see 12 Years a Slave's Lupita Nyong'o glide onto the stage in her cape-back Ralph Lauren gown alongside her director, Steve McQueen; it was a beauty.

Another big trend of the evening: baby bumps. Kerry Washington debuted hers in custom-made Balenciaga by Alexander Wang. Drew Barrymore was as fearless as ever in an embroidered Monique Lhuillier. And Olivia Wilde fulfilled all clichés, glowing in emerald sequins from Gucci Premiere.

And we've got to hand it to Emma Thompson. What better way to accessorize Christian Louboutin pumps—or bare feet, for that matter—than with a martini?

Girls Comes of Age

Вторник, 07 Января 2014 г. 09:00 + в цитатник

Production for Girls' third season wrapped in September, and Zosia Mamet enjoyed her time off before last night's HBO and Cinema Society premiere party at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The actress told Style.com, "I'm actually quite different from my character Shoshanna, so it's been nice to spend a few months not talking quite so quickly."

Not that the four leading actresses—Mamet, Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, and Jemima Kirke—don't relate to their characters. They do. Creating hyperrealistic Brooklynites is one of the keys to the show's success, and many of the guests last night, including Jenna Lyons, who has a cameo role this season, said that relatability is what makes the show so great. Karlie Kloss likened it to this generation's Sex and the City: "I'm a young 20-something living in the city, I have three sisters, and all four of us are going through these same things as they do on the show."

After screening episodes one, two, and seven, guests were ushered into the Allen Room for a full-on Brooklyn-style after-party, with a life-size replica G train car, fortune-tellers, and flannel-dressed waiters serving chicken and waffles. Amid all the hipster kitsch, the Girls reminisced on an unintended consequence of working on the show: growing up. Williams, who spent the evening on a banquette with proud dad Brian Williams, said, "My makeup artist said I'm not allowed to cry, but I found our first-ever call sheet the other day. I showed it to Lena, and we started to cry—it feels like yesterday."

So after three successful seasons, what would Dunham tell her younger self? "Relax and stop trying so hard," she said. "It's going to be OK, and you can't force people to like you—that would have saved me a lot of sleepless nights."
