Sauron -

From the Journal of Shank Traff, 3rd Moon, Year of The Claw

It is believed that Sauron was the first of the Beast Gods, sometimes called Draconians in the Old Texts, to rise from the Cataclysms, which is why his followers count so many, and the Kingdom of Rosaunia so prosperous. Of the Gods, Sauron is perhaps the most indifferent, the most unconcerned with petty concepts of morality. Though many have tried to categorize the Gods into virtuous beasts opposed to destructive devils, but these creatures are beyond our ken when it comes to arbitrary designations of good and evil. Sauron is called the God of Hunger, but rather than embodying this abstract concept in a literal form, it is my hypothesis that he is merely an extremely powerful animal, prone to the same appetites of other, less divine life forms. However, let it be said that Sauron does appear to gain some indecipherable strength from the consumption of flesh when compared to his counterparts. And so long as Sauron is kept fed and satiated by his serfs of the Cove, he is content to protect them with his full fury.

I have met Arik, prince of Rosaunia, when I traveled to the Cove. Sometimes my witch doctor persona opens just as many doors as it closes, and the people of Rosaunia evidently had nothing to fear from me, so confident they are in their Gods protection. Arik is an archetypal alpha male of the Old Earth, which I remember, sometimes in my more lucid moments, as a jock. He values physical strength and his precious masculinity, which he is eager to display using his servants, grabbing any young man or woman nearby when the mood strikes him. It is perhaps fortunate that he is so keenly desired by many of those around him - to the Rosaunians, from the servants to the nobility, Arik is their ideal specimen, haughty but personable, and still very aware of his high place in society. His blade, said to be carved from one of Saurons discarded teeth, is never far away.

Culturally, the Rosaunians resemble the Spartans of Old Earth - a proud society of warriors and philosophers, but they are so confident in their superiority to other civilizations of Urth...

I cant help but notice the decadence of the Old Earth beginning to seep through their society. The barbarian warrior cult that once worshipped Sauron with undying reverence has become fat and complacent. Although Arik often proclaims how proud he is of his heritage, I have noted that Saurons name is only referenced as a matter of tradition, usually before feasts or as part of nightly rituals. It leads me to wonder...Sauron and Rosaunia are indeed very powerful, but what happens if Rosaunia continues to grow in strength, and the seeds of a more atheistic worldview takes hold...will Sauron still be needed? Will they continue to sacrifice slaves and cattle and prisoners of war to their ever-hungry protector? The Gods brought low the powers of Old Earth, crushing the remains of ancient dynasties after the Cataclysm without much effort. But hubris is in our blood, and no one knows that better than I.

Will the Rosaunians turn on their great master one day? And where the Old Earth Superpowers failed...would they succeed?
