Edestus heinrichi

Пятница, 05 Марта 2021 г. 02:56 + в цитатник
Edestus is a genus of eugeneodontid fish from the carboniferous. It is one of the strangest fish of all time considering its dentition. like helicoprion it gre teeth in a sort of whirl, however the jawof edestus only supported a single row of teeth . These formed sth that can only be described as some sort of shears giving edestus quite the unique dentition. What exactly it did with those however is unknown. We know for eample that helicoprion most likelypreyed on ammonites, Edestus probably did sth different. A 2020 study first shed some light how edestus moved its jaw. The tooth rows probably really did work like a giant pair of shears cutting apart prey. Mayve it hunted fast moving fish, catching them mid swim and cutting them in half. As such I depicted Edestus as a lean fast swimmer. This reconstruction is much different than my old reconstruction where I depicted it as some sort of goblin shark look alike. www.deviantart.com/teratophone…

Also turns out that E.giganteus is now validanymore, having been found synonomous with E.vorax. E.heinrichi is now thought to be the largest Edestus species, reaching at least 7 metres
