When worldbuilding for Sunmakers, I tried to take problems that occur in isolated mini solar system into account. Water was one of the first problems that reared its head. Northgate isn't a perfectly isolated system which breaks the water cycle. Rainclouds go from high pressure areas (aka warm and comfy Northgate) to low pressure areas (aka the dark frozen shithole around it). On a planet that still has its star intact, water would gradually rain or snow down, melt and flow back to the ocean. Here it can't melt. That water's gone forever. So the Azure's inhabitants would be forced to find ways to get it back. The cooling system is but one of the ways they do so.

Also; did you know that even if the earth's own star would vanish tomorrow, the bottom of the ocean would not freeze? What's more, life around hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor would hardly even notice. Even if all other life on earth dies, they'll continue to mind their own business for millions of years. If the earth then ever came into orbit around a new star and the conditions were right, that life could kickstart complex evolution again.
