One of the most distinctive features of carnosaurs is the presence of a ridge of a bone, or crest, just in front of each eye. In some skulls, these crests are large and pointed, whereas in others they are smaller and rounded. The function of the crests is not known, but some experts have suggested that the differences in crest size and shape might reflect the different sexes of the animal. A carnosaur with large pointed crests might have been male, one with smaller crests female, or vice versa. Alternatively, the crests might have had a special function, such as housing glands near the eye.
The skull had powerful jaws that were ideally suited to slicing through flesh. It's neck was also very strong, and helped it hold on to violently struggling prey. Note the pointed crests situated just in front of the eye sockets.
The backward curvature of the teeth allowed it to dig them into the flesh of its prey and hold it firmly, even when the victim was trying to escape. Tiny serrations on the teeth, like those along the side of a steak knife, helped it cut through even the toughest hide.
