Variant O of the Long Beach preliminary series introduces a new missile system to the proposals: the RIM-24 Short Range Surface to Air Missiles. With this 3rd missile system the design became a truly multi-purpose Air defence vessel providing Missile coverage for all ranges: Long for the Talos, Medium for the Terrier and short for the Tartar as well as Close-In and short range ship defence via the 5" guns.
