I haven't done a monthly prompt in so long. Being in a rut (still!) with digital art, I really really wanted to give this one a go to give myself a little kick in the rear. I'm not thrilled with this but I am glad that I saw it through!
September 2020 Monthly prompt:
"
With autumn coming quickly, does your esk do anything to plan for the seasons ahead - the cold winter months, or even further ahead to the next spring? Do they do anything to help their boundaries or other flora and fauna in the area, or are they indifferent?"
At the tail end of spring, usually starting around May, the people living around Cуilн begin to harvest turf from areas of his bog. The turf is cut with a sleбn and 'footed' to each harvester's liking (I always thought they looked like miniature wedge tombs!). There are a few words for these little
piles: grуigeбn, crуigeбn, criothуg, cnuchaire, cnochaire, and I'm sure a multitude of others that are unique to particular locations, as this is an ancient practice that has been very culturally and sociologically important. A day in the bog is often a beloved activity that goes hand in hand for many with a deep sense of appreciation for and responsibility to the land and the roots of this activity, though it is difficult work.
With the cold, wet, season coming, Cуilн knows that the people around him are soon going to need this fuel to stay warm. He's not exactlly thrilled that they harvest from his bog, but he knows that the folks here are doing what they need to do to get by and are generally mindful keepers of this landscape (and he has his own methods of making sure that no big, hungry, harvesting machines are able to enter his boundary and tear it up - for this he has no tolerance!) Each autumn he carefully examines the crуigeбinнnн in the early morning mist to make sure that none of it goes to waste; if a crуigeбn has collapsed or has not been turned over properly, he carefully adjusts it to ensure that it can dry successfully so that the people do not have to take more.
Here, a little Pъca helps him out :>
