It is my pleasure to present this art collaboration I recently did with
tuomaskoivurinne depicting the cultural and scientific evolution of
Spinosaurus aegyptiacus from its first description in 1915 to the tadpole of death in 2020.
It's no secret that
Spinosaurus is my unequivocal favorite dinosaur. After the shocking redescription of the ultimate river monster dropped earlier in this I went on an art spree reconstructing
Spinosaurus and various other members of its family. It was then that
tuomaskoivurinne approached me with a fun idea to illustrate how drastically our view of this animal has changed over the years, and I didn't need to be asked twice.
I've long been an admirer of
tuomaskoivurinne 's work. At one point I had a few of his paleoart pieces set to a slideshow background on my desktop. He has a very stunning art style and it was exciting to blend that with my own coloring techniques.
From left to right:
1. Ernst Stromer's 1915 interpretation of the fragmentary fossil material he recovered.
2.
Spinosaurus during the 1980s-90s Dinosaur Renaissance as dinosaurs came to be viewed as more lively animals and
Spinosaurus itself came to be recognized as a crocodile-snouted piscivore.
3. The monstrous
T. rex killer of the 2000s first popularized by
Jurassic Park III and encouraged by various works of media in the years following it.
4. Nizar Ibrahim's 2014 publication of new material he recovered revolutionizing our view of this enigmatic dinosaur, demonstrating it to be stout-legged and semiaquatic.
5. Ibrahim's 2020 publication of new material further reinforcing our scientific understanding of
Spinosaurus as a water-dependent animal by revealing its tail was a giant fin.
