Lately, Ive been really enjoying the background art from films and shows such as Ghost in the Shell, Akira, the original Neon Genesis Evangelion, and others. It turns out that in the Japanese animation industry, they frequently use a type of paint called poster color, which is a water-based paint similar to gouache. I wanted to give it a try, and I ordered a set from Nicker, one of the premier paint makers in Japan for this type of paint.

Im still learning the ropes of this new medium, so I did the same thing I did when I was teaching myself to use oil paint: do a small figurative study with only limited invented elements. I had a lot of fun with this one, and Im really happy with the results. Ive got a few more of these in the pipeline, and then the plan is to paint my next comic using poster color!
