The HBR-1 is a development of the HABR, or Heavy Adaptive Battle Rifle, program. Atlas Defense had won this competition and helped to produce the next generation of battle rifles, with the original HBR models being chambered in either 7.62x51mm NATO or 6.5 Creedmoor. However, the United States military had requested a second run of these rifles chambered in either 5.56x45mm NATO or 7.62x39mm with a shorter barrel. This is one of the second-run rifles, being chambered in 7.62x39mm. Those who have gotten time behind the trigger of both versions of the rifle have spoken highly of the weapon's hyper-burst feature (something reminiscent of the classic AN-94, though with three rounds rather than two) and they enjoyed the weapon's rather similar controls to the M4 and M16 platform.
