Wonder Woman: Who Is Ares?

Суббота, 03 Июня 2017 г. 00:26 + в цитатник

Wonder Woman has had a plethora of memorable villains throughout her 70-year career in comics, but none of them is as menacing or powerful as Ares, the god of war. Although the original version was a bit of a comical character, he later became a fearsome foe and at one time, a formidable ally during Wonder Woman's history.

No Caption Provided

The character that would eventually become Ares first appeared in Wonder Woman #1 back in 1942. Back then, he was based on the Roman god of war, Mars. The DC version of the character was created by William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter. Mars seemed a bit comical and a bit of a doofus, even for a golden age villain. The character continued to go under the guise of Mars up until the mid-'70s where he was called both Ares and Mars interchangeably.

Ares went through a reinvention in 1987 when writer/artist George Perez, along with writer Greg Potter, turned the Roman legionnaire into what we know today--the Greek god of war, Ares. He was a towering and intimidating knight in dark armor, and many times, you could only see his glowing eyes beneath his helmet. The Injustice: Gods Among Us Ares is based on Perez's version.

Ares is an extremely powerful god. He is a master of war, strategy, and tactics on the battlefield, so he's a formidable foe for Wonder Woman. He is immortal, has super-strength and speed and can telekinetically control weapons. His armor is near indestructible and in addition to all of that, he can shapeshift and teleport. He is one of DC's strongest villains.

While Perez and Potter's version of Ares was the baddest of the bad, the villain got reinvented, once again, for Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang's run of Wonder Woman in 2011. During their 36-issue storyline, Ares was depicted as an older man with a long beard, who looked a lot like Azzarello. The character's legs were always covered in blood.

This version of the character was commonly called War. He and Wonder Woman are discovered to be family, following the realization that Diana is the daughter of Zeus, making her and Ares brother and sister. This is a very different version of the character. He is old, beaten down, and plays the role of mentor to Diana. This story gave a lot of depth to the character and made him sympathetic.

Currently, writer Greg Rucka, along with artists Nicola Scott and Liam Sharp, are in the midst of redefining the characters yet another time. Ares was imprisoned after failing to to unleash a virus to fuel his power during the "Year One" storyline. Later in the series, he is reintroduced after coming out of a portal inside a mysterious-looking tree. As of issue #23, Ares is still in chains, but it's only a mater of time before he's released again.

If you're looking for more stories involving Ares, you can check these storylines out.

  • Wonder Woman: Gods and Mortals - A reimagining of Ares by iconic creator George Perez.
  • Wonder Woman by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang - The story behind the first 36 issues of this volume is a big departure from Perez's version, but it's one of the best-written versions of the character.
  • Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott, and Liam Sharp - The 2017 bimonthly volume jumps back and forth between the past and present, and a few stories follow the newest evolution of Ares.

Wonder Woman is in theaters now. Check out GameSpot's review of the film here.

Who Is Wonder Woman?

Четверг, 01 Июня 2017 г. 23:41 + в цитатник

Wonder Woman is one of the oldest continuing comic book characters in history. Since her debut in All-Star Comics #8--in 1941--she's appeared in over a thousand comics as well as in television series, and now, her very own solo films. But who is she and what role does she play in the DC Universe? Here is a quick 101 on Wonder Woman.

No Caption Provided

Diana Prince--also known as Wonder Woman--made her debut in the early '40s, during the golden age of comics. Originally, a pilot named Steve Trevor crashed his plane onto Paradise Island (later retitled Themyscira), which was the home of Prince and the Amazons. Men had not been on the island since the days of Ancient Greece.

Prince wanted to take Trevor back to America, but the queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta, had to consult the gods before she made a decision. It was later decided that only the strongest warrior could bring Trevor back to the United States, so a tournament was held to determine who it should be. Prince went undercover--to prove she was a worthy of the task without her mother knowing--and ended up winning the tournament. For her victory, Hippolyta gave Prince the Wonder Woman costume we all know today.

No Caption Provided

In the early days, Wonder Woman didn't have the same power set she has now. She was tremendously strong, being able to swing a full-grown man above her head at ease. She was also able to run up to speeds of 80 MPH. Finally, she had bracelets that could deflect bullets. The only other familiar element would be Wonder Woman's invisible jet. In addition, she wasn't birthed. She was created out of clay, and Greek gods gave her life, making her the only person on Paradise Island not originally conceived by a man. Later on, Wonder Woman was given her lasso of truth, her sword, and her shield, all of which she still uses today.

Since the golden age of comics, Wonder Woman has gone through many changes. During the The New 52--a reboot of the DC Universe--her origin was retconned a tad. Now, she was the child of Hippolyta and Zeus, making her a demigod.

Currently, Wonder Woman is written by Greg Rucka and features the art of Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott. The bimonthly series rotates between two stories which revolve around Wonder Woman's connection to her past life in Themyscira and the gods that guide her. It's been a series that has fleshed out the character for a new generation of readers.

Wonder Woman is part of the Trinity at DC comics, which are the three most popular characters at the company: Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. She has been a member of many iconic groups: Justice Society, Justice League, and the All-Star Squadron. Over the years, she's been involved in some amazing storylines, so if you'd like to read more, check these books out:

  • Wonder Woman: Gods and Mortals - A reimagining of the character's origin by iconic creator George Perez.
  • Wonder Woman: Eyes of the Gorgon - Wonder Woman takes on Medusa and makes the ultimate sacrifice. Writer Greg Rucka teams with artist Drew Johnson for this story.
  • Wonder Woman: Land of the Dead - After the events of Eyes of the Gorgon, Wonder Woman has to take on Cheetah and Reverse-Flash.
  • Justice League: Darkseid War - The Justice League takes on Darkseid and someone else with a connection to Wonder Woman.
  • Wonder Woman by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang - Issues #0-35 of the New 52 run of Wonder Woman redefine the character and her roots to the gods. It is undoubtedly one of the best modern DC comic runs.
  • Wonder Woman: Year One - Greg Rucka returns to tell the story of the first year of Diana as the Earth's protector, with Nicola Scott on art.

Wonder Woman comes to theater on Friday, June 2. You can check out GameSpot's review of the movie here.

Wonder Woman: Who Is Doctor Poison?

Среда, 31 Мая 2017 г. 21:58 + в цитатник

DC Entertainment's newest film, Wonder Woman, is about to hit theaters, and some of its characters may not be too familiar to the average moviegoer.

One of the villains in the film, Doctor Poison--played by Elena Anaya--isn't a household name, but the character's history with Diana Prince goes all the way back to the Golden Age of comics: the 1940s.

No Caption Provided

Doctor Poison first appeared in Sensation Comics #2 back in 1942 and was created by William Moulton Marston, who also created Wonder Woman. Poison used her outfit to disguise her gender. Her real name was Princess Maru, and she was a spy, a chief of the Nazi Poison Division, and Chemical Research Chief of the Japanese Army.

Originally, the character's goal was to contaminate the US Army's water supply with a drug that messes with the brain center. Her plan was foiled by Wonder Woman, and the character disappeared from comics until the late '90s.

No Caption Provided

In the late '90s/early '00s, Doctor Poison returned; however, it turned out that this was the granddaughter of the original villain. Readers learned that the original Poison had accidentally killed herself with her "Reverso" formula, which reverses growth patterns.

The new Doctor Poison follows in her grandmother's footsteps, creating and testing poisons on innocent victims, many of which are tied to Wonder Woman. While Poison has no superhuman abilities, she is an expert in poisons, toxins, and plagues.

At one point, Poison joined the Secret Society of Super Villains and was tasked with grabbing soil samples--which came from places where a genocide had occurred--from around the world with other scientists. They uses the samples to create the Wonder Woman villain Genocide.

No Caption Provided

Most recently, Doctor Poison and her group "Poison" are taking on Wonder Woman in the "Truth" storyline. This time, the villain comes off more as an assassin than anything else. It's not a huge departure from the original character, though--it's more of an update.

She's a rarely used character in Wonder Woman's rogues gallery, but considering Poison's ties to the history of Wonder Woman and war, it makes her a perfect addition to the upcoming movie. You can see Doctor Poison for yourself in Wonder Woman, which comes to theaters on Friday, June 2.

You can check GameSpot's review of the film which Edmond Tran said, "the film's focus on exploring who she is as a person, as well as what she can do as a superhuman gives the character, and overall film, a gratifying roundedness that makes you eager for more."

Doctor Poison recommended reading:

  • Wonder Woman "The Truth"(2017)
  • Wonder Woman "The Land of the Lost" (2002)
  • Wonder Woman "Pandora Virus (2000)

Spider-Man: Homecoming Trailer 3 Breakdown

Среда, 24 Мая 2017 г. 19:19 + в цитатник

The latest trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming has arrived, and you can watch it here. The video offered more insight into the film, including some new gadgets for Peter Parker's Spider-Man costume. Here's what we learned about the July 7 film.

In addition, you can check out the new poster for the film, which is filled with floating heads.

No Caption Provided

The trailer opens with Parker (Tom Holland) putting on the costume, and as he finishes, it lights up and says, "Good evening, Peter." If you remember, the suit he is wearing was given to him by Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War, so or course, there's some Stark tech built into it.

No Caption Provided

The AI assistant continues: "You have 576 possible web shooter combinations." We have a POV shot of Parker looking at his hands, and it's a lot like what Stark sees out of his Iron Man helmet. There is a lot of information being presented that supposedly will help Parker fight crime.

No Caption Provided

Spider-Man stops a bank robbery, with criminals wearing cheap-looking Avengers masks. These aren't your typical run-of-the-mill criminals though--they have advanced weaponry.

No Caption Provided

One of the robbers shoots Spider-Man causing Parker to be stuck in mid-air. "This feels so strange," he shouts during the battle. As we learned in previous trailers, Vulture says, "The world's changing, boys. It's time we changed too." This is the moment in the film where Vulture's crew revealed their high tech weapons.

No Caption Provided

Again, there is a scene showing off the advanced technology in Spider-Man's suit. While he is chasing down a white van, Vulture (Michael Keaton) grabs him and flies into the sky, only to drop him. Spider-Man's suit deploys a parachute as soon as Vulture lets him go.

No Caption Provided

A lot of the shots of Vulture have been mid-action, but this trailer gave the audience a nice shot of his costume.

No Caption Provided

Donald Glover's character has still not been revealed for the film. We've seen him in past trailers standing next to someone firing advanced weaponry. However, this is the first time we've seen him and Spider-Man in the same scene. He tells Parker, "You gotta get better at this part of the job." This could the refer to Spider-Man taking him down as an arms dealer, or is Glover's character working with Spider-Man and giving him some advice?

No Caption Provided

Spider-Man says to Glover's character, "I don't understand. I'm intimidating." Because of the way Parker says that line and his posture, it seems like the two are working together. However, Glover's role is still unclear.

Many fans are speculating he's either Tinkerer--a genius engineer--or Prowler--a criminal inventor who eventually became one of the good guys.

No Caption Provided

Michelle (Zendaya) says to Parker, "Where are you going? What are you hiding, Peter? Just kidding. I don't care. Bye." It may seem like a one-off joke, but it's apparent Parker's closest friend, Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) knows about his secret. Could other people be catching on?

No Caption Provided

Towards the end of the trailer, there is a quick shot of Iron Man and Spider-Man traversing New York City together.

No Caption Provided

Leeds looks at the programming for the Spider-Man suit and finds there a number of other functions. They are all disabled by the "Training Wheels Protocol."

No Caption Provided

"I'm sick of Mr. Stark treating me like a kid," Parker says to Leeds as he jumps on a bed.

No Caption Provided

In addition, an international trailer was released--which you can watch here--and it opens from Spider-Man's perspective during the Avengers battle in Civil War. Spider-Man is really excited and acts like a total fanboy.

No Caption Provided

There is s selfie shot of Spider-Man during the battle, and Ant-Man grows behind him.

No Caption Provided

Before he became Vulture, Adrian Toomes was cleaning up after the Avengers battle in the first film. Essentially, he worked for the comic equivalent of Damage Control--the team that repaired the city after major battles. He got fed up and somehow, this led him to a life of crime.

No Caption Provided

Later, Vulture explains that his crew has been operating for eight years without any trouble, until Spider-Man came along. He also explains that he plans to rob a plane with Avengers weaponry. Earlier in the trailer, we see him holding an Iron Man faceplate.

No Caption Provided

"We're gonna put them out of business. We're gonna take everything they got," he says. There's a shot of Vulture in front of the Avengers tower. This leads to the battle we saw in earlier trailers where Spider-Man--in a homemade suit--is fighting Vulture on top of a plane over NYC.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7.

CW Reveals Black Lightning Trailer

Четверг, 18 Мая 2017 г. 20:57 + в цитатник

CW has another series based on a DC Entertainment property coming to the network. Black Lightning follows a high school principal who moonlighted as a superhero. He gave up the costume but found himself drawn back to it when violence escalated in the streets. You can check out the full trailer below.

The series stars Cress Williams (Code Black) as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning alongside China Anne McClain (Grown Ups) and Nafessa Williams (Code Black) who play his daughters, Jennifer and Anissa. The series is produced by Greg Berlanti, who is known for his other comic adaptations on CW: Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow.

However, although the other DC adaptations exist in the same universe and have crossover episodes, for now, Black Lightning will be on its own: "Black Lightning at this time is not part of the Arrowverse, it's a separate thing," CW's Network president Mark Pedowitz explained (via The Wrap). "It will not be part of a five-way crossover. However, we will be doing another four-way crossover this year."

The character Black Lightning first appeared in Black Lightning #1 in 1977. He was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. He has an electricity-based powerset, and much like the trailer shows, he's determined to clean up the streets of crime.

At this time, there is no information for when this new series will debut.

Deadpool's Creator Discusses Excitement Over FXX's Animated Series And New Comic

Четверг, 18 Мая 2017 г. 00:57 + в цитатник

Rob Liefeld is responsible for the creation of a plethora of characters in comics, such as Cable, Domino, Shatterstar, and plenty more, but the most notable of them is the "Merc with a Mouth," Deadpool. Aside from the 2016 film and its upcoming sequel, FXX recently announced an adult animated series is in the works.

No Caption Provided

However, Deadpool is still going strong in the realm where he originated: comics. Today, Marvel released an original graphic novel titled Deadpool: Bad Blood, written by Rob Liefeld, Chad Bowers, and Chris Sims, with Liefeld doing the art. This 100-page book introduces a new villain, Thumper. "In terms of Deadpool having a nemesis, he has a borrowed group of bad guys. They belong to other characters," Liefeld explained to GameSpot. "He's short on his own rogues gallery. Those uniquely Deadpool. I figured let's give him a menace and nemesis that is unique to him and over the course of the story, you'll see Thumper has touched X-Force somewhat and Deadpool and Domino."

Liefeld explained that fans of the character come from all over the place: comics, the movie, and especially the world of video games, like Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, where Deadpool gained a ton of mainstream appeal, prior to the 2016 movie. Along with Bowers and Sims, Liefeld wanted to appeal to as large of an audience as possible.

The graphic novel, Bad Blood, explores Wade Wilson's (Deadpool) past all while introducing this new villain. "It's about the depths our new character took to emulate everything about Wade," Liefeld said. "I just wanted to do something more character driven in terms of establishing a new, sustainable nemesis for Deadpool and relationships are the best way to establish that."

If the name "Thumper" seems familiar, it might be because it's named after the character from Bambi "[W]hen I said I wanted the bad guy's name to be Thumper, I was scared to form those words," explained Liefeld. "I thought I was going to get laughed at. When I was a kid, my dad drove me to the drive in, and my parents took me to see Bambi, and Thumper was the name of this cute little rabbit. Now, Thumper is the name of a guy who beats Deadpool into the pavement. [Marvel] was like, "Yeah! Cleared! We love it! Awesome!" I can now say that Deadpool is battling Thumper, so there's something real rich from my childhood there. It's so damned funny."

Liefeld is extremely passionate about Deadpool and genuinely excited about what is being done with the character on both the small and large screen. However, the recent news about the adult animated series is something the Deadpool creator cannot wait to share: "The secret I had to keep that was the toughest in the last 14 months was that Deadpool cartoon on FXX. I have great friends in the business. They're my pals. I do dinners and lunches with them. They proclaimed to me in March of 2016, 'Deadpool's gonna be an adult cartoon.' I'm like, 'WHAT?!' I kept all this to myself, and I got the call late last fall that Donald Glover was going to be writing and producing it, and I almost drove off the freeway. I just couldn't believe it."

"It just continues to build off that relationship--that Marvel is doing a lot of business with Fox, which is good for everybody. It's cool, man. I was fortunate enough to see Donald the night of the Golden Globes, where he had won an armful of awards for Atlanta, deservedly so. I congratulated him on his new gig--him and his brother--on Deadpool, and he was excited and had tons of greats ideas, and I can't wait to see what he's going to come up with and how the character benefits from another brilliant, creative mind. It's gonna be great."

Deadpool: Bad Blood is now available in stores. You can see an unlettered preview of the book above.

Ludi Lin Cast As Murk In Aquaman Movie

Вторник, 16 Мая 2017 г. 00:07 + в цитатник

Ludi Lin, who played the Black Ranger in the recent Power Rangers movie, has been cast in DC's 2018 superhero film Aquaman.

No Caption Provided

According to Deadline, Lin will play Murk, the Commander of the Atlantian Royal Guard and leader of the Men-Of-War, the frontline army for Atlantis. He joins Jason Mamoa, who plays the titular role, which will be directed by James Wan (The Conjuring).

Murk is a relatively new character who first appeared in 2013 in Aquaman #17. He wascreated by Geoff Johns and Paul Pelletier. While Murk is extremely loyal to Atlantis and its people, there have been numerous occasions where this complex character is untrusting and questions the loyalty of Aquaman and Aquaman's wife Mera.

Lin joins Dolph Lungren, who plays King Nereus, along with The Get Down star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who plays Aquaman's arch-nemesis Black Manta. Although it was originally slated for an October 2018 release, Aquaman has been pushed back and will now come out on December 21, 2018.

The Watchmen And DC Universe Crossover Continues In Doomsday Clock

Понедельник, 15 Мая 2017 г. 17:32 + в цитатник

In the most anticipated story of the year, New York Times bestselling writer Geoff Johns confirms Watchmen will make an epic return to the DC Universe this November. As “The Button” crossover comes to a close in FLASH #22 this Wednesday, the four page epilogue affirms the mystery will continue with DOOMSDAY CLOCK from Johns and legendary artists Gary Frank and Brad Anderson.

No Caption Provided

“It's time. Last year, the DC Universe confronted the legacy of Watchmen in Rebirth the way Watchmen confronted the legacy of superhero comics three decades ago,” explains writer Geoff Johns. “Thematically, and metaphorically, there was no better choice than to use Dr. Manhattan. If you’re going to have a conflict between optimism and pessimism, a battle between the very forces of hope and despair, you need to have someone who personifies the cynicism that has leaked into our hearts and also has the ability to affect the entire DCU. It’s all paying off this November with DOOMSDAY CLOCK.”

“DOOMSDAY CLOCK is a story for fans who love the DC Universe and Watchmen and want to see what a master of this genre creates when he puts them together,” says Frank. “As for my artistic approach to the series, each panel is extremely detailed and I am constantly thinking through the position of every single element.”

Who Is Marvel's Adam Warlock?

Пятница, 05 Мая 2017 г. 05:00 + в цитатник

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is in theaters internationally now and comes to the US on May 5, expands upon the Marvel Cinematic Universe by introducing new characters of the cosmic variety. The newest film in the studio's constantly growing universe debuts a slew of new characters during the five post-credit sequences, which we break down here.

No Caption Provided

We're taking a closer look at Warlock, a character who has heavy ties to the Marvel cosmic universe.

Warning: Spoilers for the post-credit sequence of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 below.

During one of the after-credit scenes, we see a cocoon large enough to hold a person as Ayesha says "I think I will call him… Adam." The Adam she is referring to is Adam Warlock. Who is he and where did he come from?

No Caption Provided

Warlock is first mentioned in Fantastic Four #66 back in 1967, although we don't get to actually see him until issue #67. He was created by the iconic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Originally, the character was simply known as "Him." He was scientifically engineered by a group called The Enclave as part of its attempt to create the perfect being. He started out in a cocoon and eventually emerged into the world as a He-Man-looking character.

Of course, the perfect being is going to have an outstanding power set. Aside from the standard superhuman strength and durability, Warlock is capable of absorbing and storing cosmic energy. He can project this energy as a weapon or use it to augment his own physical abilities. In addition, he could also spin himself into a regenerative cocoon to heal himself or prevent death.

What makes Warlock such an important character is that his story is intertwined with the Infinity Stones and Infinity Gauntlet, which have been and will continue to be a big part of the Marvel films. He was once granted the Soul Gem and became ruler of the pocket universe that existed inside of it. The gem could peer into someone's soul and had the ability to steal and trap it.

No Caption Provided

Of course, because of his ties to the Soul Gem, Warlock has been a part of numerous storylines where the Infinity Gauntlet was involved. Most notably, Warlock joined the other heroes in the Marvel Universe to battle Thanos, who was in control of the Infinity Gems, in the 1991 story The Infinity Gauntlet.

When we think about how Warlock could fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe--if he does end up being used--it's more than likely he'll join the heroes of Earth to battle Thanos in an adaptation of The Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos has been set up as an upcoming villain, and we've already seen a few of the Infinity Stones.

Looking for more Adam Warlock? Check out these comics featuring the character.

  • The Infinity Gauntlet
  • The Infinity War
  • Infinity Crusade
  • Annihilation: Conquest
  • Thanos: The Infinity Relativity

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2: Who Are The Post-Credit Characters?

Суббота, 29 Апреля 2017 г. 01:00 + в цитатник

The sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy is currently in theaters in what seems to be everywhere but the US, which releases on May 5. As you may have heard, the film has five post-credit sequences, which we break down here. We're talking about one of them specifically and giving you some insight from the comic books, so we can get a better understanding of what's going on.

If you're curious for GameSpot's take on the film, check out our review here.

Warning: Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ahead.

No Caption Provided

Specifically, we are taking a look at the post-credit sequence involving some very familiar faces. Stakar Ogord (Sylvester Stallone) puts together his own team of Guardians. This team consists of Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh), Krugarr, and Mainframe (voiced by Miley Cyrus). In the film, all of these characters were members of the Reavers.

These aren't all the original Guardians of the Galaxy team members in the comics. That team consisted of Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Yondu, and Martinex. However, these are all characters that are very much a part of the history and mythos of the team. In addition, the majority of their stories took place in an alternate universe.

Here are the characters we saw in the post-credit sequence and where they come from in the comics.

Stakar Ogord AKA Starhawk

No Caption Provided

Stallone plays Stakar Ogord, also known as Starhawk. The character first appeared in The Defenders #27 back in 1975. Ogord was adopted by a Reaver named Arcturus. He and his adopted sister Aleta accidentally brought Hawk God to life, and they both gained powers.

He has perceived knowledge of the past and future, and every time he tries to change his timeline, he creates an alternate reality. Starhawk has been reborn into an infant body many times. The comic book version is a bit overpowered, being able to travel faster than light, having super-human strength and a long lifespan, and not aging over the course of 1,000 years. More than likely, the cinematic version won't be as powerful.

Charlie-27

No Caption Provided

Rhames plays Charlie-27, a co-founder of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the 31st century. He first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in 1969, which was in the introduction of this now iconic team. Charlie worked on gas-mining platforms on Jupiter, but after his people were killed off by the Badoon, he started the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Because Charlie-27 is a genetically engineered human, he has increased strength, stamina, and durability. In addition, because he was created to work on Jupiter, he can withstand greater amounts of pressure and gravity compared to a human being. All of these abilities seem pretty reasonable for the cinematic universe, so if the team returns, Charlie-27 should be similar to his comic book counterpart.

Aleta Ogord

No Caption Provided

Michelle Yeoh plays Aleta Ogord, the sister of Starhawk. She also had her first appearance in The Defenders #27 back in 1975. After she and her brother woke the Hawk God, all three of them became one being: Starhawk. Aleta spent most of her time in limbo, until later when she was separated into a being of pure light.

Because of this, she can control light and make constructs from it. In addition, she can become intangible. Much like her brother, she also has super-human strength and a long lifespan. For the movies, she may also have her powers dwindled a bit.

Krugarr

No Caption Provided

Krugarr first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1 in 1991. He is a Lem, an alien species we don't see much of in the comics. He has ties to Doctor Strange, becoming Strange's apprentice during the 22nd century. Eventually, the alien became Sorcerer Supreme.

He's the alien version of Doctor Strange but--when he reaches his potential--a lot more powerful. Sorcery was just introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the chances of this character having ties to Doctor Strange, if they use Krugarr again, are slim to none. More than likely, he'll just be a regular alien who may have some enhanced abilities.

Mainframe

No Caption Provided

Finally, there is Mainframe, who is voiced by Cyrus. The character first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy #5 in 1990. Mainframe is an evolved version of Vision. He became the operating system of an entire planet and controlled the climate. In addition, he also guarded Captain America's shield.

Mainframe isn't a physical being, although we do see holograms of the character in the comics. It's hard to say what the cinematic version of the character will eventually be like, since we only see her briefly during the post-credit sequence, so it's hard to tell if she will have any connection to the current Vision on Earth.

DC Reveals New Banner, Dark Matter

Четверг, 20 Апреля 2017 г. 21:28 + в цитатник

DC Comics revealed six new titles at a press conference at C2E2 today. These titles will fall under the banner "Dark Matter" and will begin to debut this summer.

No Caption Provided

It kicks off with Dark Knights: Metal in August. Former Batman creative team Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo reunite for this book, which will set the tone and world for the other series. The new banner will focus on what the publisher called Masterclass artists working with newer writers. It will "bring the sense of craft into storytelling," explained DC co-publisher Jim Lee during a press conference on Thursday morning.

The publisher wants to expand its universe and reach a new audience. co-publisher of DC Dan Didio explained that "It's a starting point for characters. It's a starting point for stories. We gotta keep building. We gotta keep introducing people to the DCU." The Dark Matter banner will exist alongside the regular DC Universe, and the issues will cost $3. Variant covers for the books will not be released.

Below is the list of upcoming books under the Dark Matter label.

September:

  • Sideways by Dan DiDio, Justin Jordan, and Kenneth Rocafort. A teenager comes into contact with dark matter and gains the ability to teleport through the dark dimension.

October:

  • Immortal Men by James Tynion IV and Jim Lee. Five siblings who were born at the beginning of time recruit the elite to stop Armageddon. This will be a horror series.
  • Damage by Robert Venditti and Tony S. Daniel. Ethan Avery is cursed with the ability to unleash a monster for one hour at a time.

December:

  • The Silencer by Dan Abnett with art by John Romita Jr. This book follows an assassin who moves to the suburbs for a normal life. Romita Jr. described the book as John Wick without the tragedy.
  • New Challengers by Scott Snyder and Andy Kubert. An adventure book in the vein of the classic DC series Challengers of the Unknown.

Below, you'll find character designs for the upcoming books.

Didio claimed that the real winners for this new banner are the fans. They want to have that same burst of creative energy that the publisher had when Jack Kirby introduced elements like Fourth World and Kamandi to DC back in the early '70s. Romita Jr. said that they have to keep trying new ideas, explaining that they can't remain stagnant. There needs to be some fearlessness when creating new ideas.

Exclusive Preview: Batman #21 "The Button" Part One

Понедельник, 17 Апреля 2017 г. 22:00 + в цитатник

Last year, DC changed their comic continuity with Rebirth. The one-shot issue brought the characters back to their core, while alluding that something or someone more powerful was behind the alteration to the universe: Doctor Manhattan from the critically acclaimed book Watchmen.

Now, DC is giving readers some answers to the questions that have been plaguing their minds since last May. The Batman/Flash crossover story The Button kicks off in Batman #21.

No Caption Provided

Batman and The Flash team up to learn more about the mysterious button--once owned by The Comedian--which is embedded in the walls of the Batcave. However, Reverse Flash is also a part of this mystery, as seen in the preview above.

DC has been tight-lipped about the four-part crossover, which will take place in Batman #21-22 and Flash #21-22. The publisher released a solicitation for the story but nothing else: "What starts as a simple investigation turns deadly when the secrets of the button prove irresistible to an unwelcome third party—and it's not who anyone suspects. It's a mystery woven through time, and the ticking clock starts here!"

Writer Tom King will continue his run on Batman with artist Jason Fabok and colorist Brad Anderson for the upcoming story. Batman #21 will go on sale on Wednesday, April 19 available at comic shops and digitally.
