The Ilulissat City Museum opened in 1973. The museum harbors a variety of permanent exhibits on the first floor. These cover prehistoric life, the history of the town, and fishing practices in the area. Historic photographs by Jette Bang and Knud Rasmussen are also exhibited. The second floor has a permanent exhibit about the Greenlandic national clothing, as well as the changing temporary exhibits. The area around the museum is an Open Air Museum, showing traditional Greenlandic equipment and tools, as well as this preserved fisherman's hut. The museum was formerly a teachers' college called "Ajoqersuivissuaq" ("a place to be taught" in Greenlandic) built in 1848. This hut was the home for a family. The benches doubled as beds. The cast iron stove provided heat as well as  cooking. The newspapers on the walls are for decoration. At Christmas, parents would hang new newspapers as a surprise for their chidren.
