A 300' high aerial view overlooking Vya, Nevada. Named after Vya Wimer, the first European heritage baby born in Long Valley, the ghost town formerly housed a post office which operated from 1910 to 1941. Nearby is the old Applegate Trail, to which pioneers described the background rock formations as looking like a bishop's mitre. Being of volcanic tuff, they resemble a smaller scale version of the tuff formations in Cappadocia, Turkey. During the holiday season of 1992-93, this remote area became the scene of a stranded family who got their vehicle stuck in snow drifts. Jim Stolpa, the husband of his wife & newborn, eventually had to walk 50 miles to seek help near Vya. The film Snowbound: The Jim and Jennifer Stolpa Story is based on this event.
