Named Montgomery after the Norman lord who established a motte-and-bailey wooden fort at nearby Hen Domen, the present castle was built in the early 13th century, during the reign of Henry III. It sits on a hilltop with commanding views over the mid-Wales border. Having survived several attacks by Welsh forces throughout the 13th century, it ultimately met its fate in 1649, when it was comprehensibly slighted after the English Civil War.
