Dappled sunlight grazes our sleepy lakeside camp. The fallen gods of the forest keep us company. There is yet no activity, even though we should be up and moving. Tomorrow we will tackle the rugged unmaintained trail that journeys through a half mile of atrocious burn zone deadfall, crossing over, and under, 100 charred and spiky fallen trees. After that torture we will ascend the brushy climber’s trail, and navigate more deadfall, climbing over 1,200 vertical feet in 0.7 of a mile to arrive at Horseshoe Lake, a pristine alpine sanctuary that hosts clear blue waters and the gnarly, yet delicate, alpine larches.

Lake Stuart’s still waters mirror the magnificent nearby peaks with the promise of good weather and adventure ahead. Lake Stuart rests at an elevation of 5,065 feet in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of Washington’s Cascade Mountains.

The Ch^ateau de Cand'e (Cand'e Castle) in Monts (Indre-et-Loire) - Centre Val de Loire - France - is an example of the modernisation of the famous Renaissance Ch^ateaux of the Loire Valley. In 1927, Charles Bedaux, a Franco-American industrial millionaire, and his wife Fern, purchased the castle and made it so comfortable for its time that the Duke of Windsor, former King of England, decided to use it as the venue for his wedding to Wallis Simpson in 1937. The religious ceremony took place in the music room. This bright room in shades of yellow hides a small alcove which houses a 1924 Erard rosewood piano with automatic play.
