The Calvario Hermitage in Estepona is a significant religious and cultural site located in the town of Estepona, Spain. This historic hermitage holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors due to its historical significance and picturesque location. The Calvario Hermitage is situated atop a hill, offering panoramic views of Estepona and its surrounding landscape. The word "Calvario" is derived from the Latin word "Calvaria," which means "skull." In Christian tradition, the term refers to the site of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This hermitage was likely named Calvario due to its role as a place of meditation and reflection on the suffering of Christ. The hermitage's construction and origin date back to the 18th century. It was built as a small chapel with a simple design that reflects the traditional Andalusian architectural style. The building is characterized by its white-washed walls, terracotta roof tiles, and a bell tower that adds to its charm. One of the most notable features of the Calvario Hermitage is the Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) path that leads to the hermitage. This path consists of a series of 15 stations that represent the events of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. It's a common practice for believers to walk along this path, stopping at each station to meditate and pray. The Calvario Hermitage serves as a pilgrimage site, especially during religious festivals and significant dates in the Christian calendar. On Good Friday, a procession often takes place, where the faithful carry an image of Jesus on the cross through the streets of Estepona, concluding at the hermitage. This event attracts both religious participants and curious onlookers interested in witnessing the traditional customs of the region. The hermitage's setting on a hill not only provides spiritual solace but also offers breathtaking views of Estepona and the Mediterranean coastline. This combination of spiritual significance and natural beauty makes the Calvario Hermitage a popular destination for both religious and cultural tourism in Estepona. Visitors can appreciate the tranquility of the surroundings, reflect on its historical and religious significance, and enjoy the stunning vistas that the location offers.

THE SACRISTY We know nothing of the Gothic sacristy, except that it was in the same place that the Baroque ante-sacry occupies today. The current sacristy was designed by Francisco de la Riva Ladr'on de Guevara (1686 – 1741) and was built between 1732 and 1734. It is divided into two spaces: the antechamber that communicates with the ambulatory and the sacristy itself. The latter is a space with a cruciform plan that in its central part is covered with a dome on a drum supported by pendentives. The architecture, despite the date of construction, is very sober, in line with the ambulatory. However, the decoration of the doorway that connects the ambulatory with the antechamber refers to the style of the mid-XVII century, along the lines of the Capilla de los Vigiles (1627-1640), so it must be attributed to Juan de Naveda ( 1590-1638); the relief of the Annunciation, carved on the spandrels, responds to the style of Luis Fern'andez de la Vega (1601 – 1675). In the sacristy an interesting set of paintings is preserved, among which the oil on canvas "Santa Eulalia de M'erida" (1640), by Diego Valent'in D'iaz (1586 - 1660) and the fresco on the dome with the representation of the "Asunci'on of the Virgin”, a copy by Francisco Mart'inez Bustamante (1680 – 1745) of an original by Giovanni Lanfranco (1582 – 1647). In 1766, Jos'e Bernardo de la Meana (1715 – 1790) carved two ewers and a basin in jasper, as well as two wooden high-reliefs with images of Ecce Homo and La Dolorosa. The chests of drawers were made taking advantage of the fragments of the Gothic chest of drawers, they are the work of Jos'e Bernardo de la Meana and the carpenter Juan de Valville. https://catedraldeoviedo.com/conoce-cada-rincon/la-sacristia/
