Located in the Besancon city center, the Place du 8 de Septembre, formerly Place Saint-Pierre, is a place full of symbolism, here there was an attack on the German Library during the 2nd World War and where the Americans celebrated their arrival on September 1944. Place du 8 de Septembre houses the church of St. Pierre, visible in this panorama, a neoclassical church built in 1782-1786, which has a bell tower of about seventy meters including the cross and an unusual facade, particularly four Corinthian columns that support the front. The Hotel de Ville is also located in this square, also visible in this panorama, with its protruding facade alternating blue and ocher stones from Chailluz, representing the Renaissance style.

Besancon is a city in eastern France, capital of the department of Doubs in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comt'e. Situated on the banks of the River Doubs, it lies in a horseshoe-shaped meander of the River Doubs, 75 km east of Dijon. The Grande Rue, where this panorama was photographed, is the main street of the city of Besancon, with many notable buildings, and where Victor Hugo was born, at no 140. A city known for the watchmaking industry, introduced by Swiss refugees in the late 18th century, it is still France's main center in this industry, Besancon is also an important center for textiles and leather. Today, Besancon is the capital of the Franche Comt'e region, a successful university town that has a beautiful historic centre, Roman remains, two museums and a Renaissance palace. On a high point, overlooking the river Doubs and the city of Besancon, is the great 17th-century citadel of Vauban, a UNESCO world heritage site.

The Place de la R'evolution is the largest square in the city of Besancon located in the historic center of the city. It has this name because there was a battle of the French Revolution in 1830. The square was a market for a long time until it was redesigned and renamed, so it is also known as Market Square with numerous cafes and terraces. The Place de la R'evolution is surrounded by the Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology and the Conservatory of Music, this place is the center of an artistic universe. In the center of the square stands a fountain built in stone in the 19th century by the famous sculptor Alphonse Delacroix. It is a tribute to the engineering development that allowed water to enter the city.

The Battant Bridge over the River Doubs, in Besancon, connects the Grand Rue to the Rue de la Madelaine, where the Church of the same name is located, which can be seen in this panorama. It is mostly pedestrian with only one tram line. Panorama photographed on the Battant Bridge in front of the statue of Jouffroy d'Abbans. This life-size sculpture, fixed to the ground, honors an 18th and 19th century engineer who experimented with the first steamboat at Doubs in 1776.
