Avignon's city center is completely surrounded by 4.3 kilometers of ramparts, highlighting the importance of fortifications in 14th century France. Over the years, the city's perimeter grew and successive defenses were modified. In the 14th century, this city in the south of France was the seat of the papacy. The Palais des Papes, an austere-looking fortress richly decorated by Simone Martini and Matteo Giovanetti, dominates the city, the surrounding walls and the remains of a 12th-century bridge over the Rh^one (Pont d'Avignon), complete a set of monuments. which testify to the leading role played by Avignon in 14th century Christian Europe. Panorama photographed, at the end of the day, on the Bd de l'Oulle between the Quai de Oulle and the Pont 'Edouard Daladier.
