The University of Minho was founded in August 1973 and received the first students in the 1975/76 school year. Based on a matrix system structured in "Education Units", "Research Units" and "Support Units", needed concentrated facilities, university campus type, which were open to the community. The first years of this University Polo of Guimar~aes worked at the Palace of Vila Flor, acquired by the municipality in 1976. In 1980 Arq fernando T'avora presents the general plan of urbanization of Guimar~aes in which he chooses a vast area located between Mount Latito (Castle de Guimar~aes ) And the Hill of S. Pedro de Azur'em, close to the historical center of the city and with an excellent landscape framing, for the future university campus of Guimar~aes. Although its source end is close to the castle, Azur'em was considered outside the urban limits until the end of the nineteenth century. If between the eighteenth and 19th centuries the population of almost triplicate Azur'em, this is no longer an eminently rural area, with a very reduced constructive density.

Taking the name ‘le Zouch’ from Bretons who were lords of the manor of Aschebie after the Norman Conquest, the present castle was built as a seat of power for William, Lord Hastings, during the 1470s. As a close confidant of Edward IV he was one of the most powerful men in England. Unfortunately, he was summarily executed by the future Richard III before the castle was complete, although it remained in the Hastings family.  During the English Civil War it was used as a Royalist stronghold. After their defeat it was heavily slighted in 1646. The ruins became a famous Regency period tourist attraction after featuring in the Sir Walter Scott novel, Ivanhoe.
