A 14th century three-storey towerhouse built as a fortified residence during the Anglo-Scottish wars. The Jacobean range on the west side of the tower was added in 1615 with a further extension built a century later, since demolished, that included a walled garden. It was replaced as a residence in the early 19th century, when the owners moved to the nearby Belsay Hall.

The World: Mars Panorama - Curiosity rover: Martian solar day 2991

NASA's Mars Exploration Program (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS)    Sol 2991: New Year's Resolution   The images for panorama obtained by the rover's 34-millimeter Mast Camera. The mosaic, which stretches about 30,000 pixels width, includes 123 images taken on Sol 2991 (January 3, 2021).   Here on Earth, people often use the start of a new year as an opportunity to adopt new resolutions for themselves. In planetary exploration, we often talk about a different kind of resolution, namely the spatial resolution of the cameras carried by a spacecraft. The Curiosity rover has a large suite of cameras with a range of spatial resolutions, one of which is the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera. Located at the end of the rover’s robotic arm, MAHLI can be placed in close proximity to the surface to acquire incredibly high-resolution images of the grains within loose soil and rocks. And in the rover’s first plan of 2021, MAHLI’s imaging capabilities took center stage. Right before the holiday break, Curiosity had been making her way across rubbly terrain towards a set of large sand ripples located within the Sands of Forvie. One of our primary motivations for visiting these ripples was to acquire high-resolution MAHLI images of the sand comprising them. When wind blows sand around, it naturally sorts it based on properties such as particle size, so close-up images of sand grains on different parts of a ripple can provide a means to study natural sorting processes and the winds controlling them. As seen in the image above (acquired at our current location on Sol 2989), MAHLI is able to resolve the size, shape, and color of individual grains of sand that are no larger than those you would find at a beach here on Earth. As today provided our first opportunity to study the Sands of Forvie ripples after our New Year’s scuff, a major focus of our planning was to obtain a preliminary set of MAHLI images of the crest and trough of a prominent ripple in our workspace. These images will allow the team to plan a second set of even higher-resolution MAHLI images tomorrow. Other scientific measurements planned today included an APXS measurement to accompany MAHLI images of the ripple trough, ChemCam observations on sand targets “Carsaig East” and “Carsaig Arches," and Mastcam “change detection” images for tracking sand motion. Special morning and evening change detection images were also scheduled to help us better constrain the timing and direction of the winds responsible for shaping the Sands of Forvie ripples. A Mastcam stereo mosaic and Mastcam multispectral observation will provide additional data on the ripples in our immediate workspace. DAN and REMS measurements, as well as a small set of Navcam and Mastcam observations will also allow us to probe the current environmental conditions. The team is excited to be ringing in the new year at this interesting – and sandy – spot, and we are looking forward to exploring many more new terrains in 2021 as we continue our traverse up Mount Sharp.   Mariah Baker Planetary Geologist at Johns Hopkins University   Other panoramas of Mars by Curiosity rover: http://www.360cities.net/sets/curiosity-mars

England: Castle Acre Priory, Norfolk

The impact of the Norman Conquest is writ large at Castle Acre. The tiny Norfolk village is dominated by a substantial motte-and-bailey castle, the ruins of an impressive Cluniac priory and the remains of its 12th century town defences. The priory and nearby castle were founded by William de Warenne, a Norman knight who had fought alongside William the Conqueror. Construction of the church was a slow process. It wasn't consecrated until 1146–8, with the remainder of the site taking a further 50 years to complete. It was populated by a small community of French monks, making it one of the first monasteries of the Cluniac order in England. In 1537, along with around 800 other similar institutions, the priory was dissolved as part of King Henry VIII’s Suppression of the Monasteries. The church was subsequently demolished and the site sold off. Ownership passed to the lawyer and politician Sir Edward Coke, in 1615, in whose family it remains today.

The old urban center of Viseu, aka "Centro Hist'orico", has a medieval matrix, formed around the central core of the Cathedral, the seat of episcopal power. This urban area was delimited by the wall built in the 14th century, defining the city of the non-city. Although only a few fragments of the wall are preserved, the intramural city continues to maintain its symbolic character, its identity traits sedimented by constant cultural changes over time. Castles are part of our medieval imagination as structures where kings defined war strategies. The formation of our identity owes a lot to these fortifications. Isolated or in a network, they guaranteed the security of the territory. In the 12th century, similarly to what happened throughout the Portuguese territory, the castle of the city of Viseu was built, documented for the first time in 1123. Towering on the S'e hill, it incorporated the cathedral and the royal palace into its bosom. , becoming an impregnable fortification. The Fernandine Wars dictated its term, resisting the keep that currently faces Praca D. Duarte.

Aerial view about 100' overlooking the Westside Road just north of Rocky Point, Oregon.  It was here that 8 year old Derrick Engebretson disappeared here on December 5, 2008.  That day, he was accompanied by his father & grandfather in search for a Christmas tree.  The trio ventured uphill into the woods but then somehow Derrick later become separated.  Tracks indicate he ventured northwards before descending back to the road near the 2.5 marker along the road, also creating a snow angel in the process.  His tracks ended abruptly back at this road about 1/4 mile north, yet unfortunately a snow plow had recently ran through (as it had been snowing).  Search & rescue were delayed by nearly five hours as they happened to be having their annual Christmas party that day.  Further delays were also caused by a blizzard & frigid temperatures.  Searching was called off after eight days however the Engebretson family continued to return nearly every weekend looking for their son, taking a psychological & financial toll from the events.  It is speculated Derrick either succombed to the elements or was more likely abducted alongside the road.  Only one possible suspect, Frank Milligan, was named & he later confessed to his abduction & murder, however he later retracted his statement.  Over 22 years on & the case remains cold.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Derrick_Engebretson
