Tom and Gladdie Johnston retired from the advertising business in the 1950's to run a hotel on the tiny island of Bequia. Their favourite place on the island was the rock arch known as The Moonhole and in the 1960's they bought the entire peninsula in which it is located and built the first house under the arch. The Moonhole Company was formed and a further sixteen houses and service buildings were constructed. An untrained architect or builder, Tom worked by eye with local masons and carpenters. Rocks and trees were incorporated into the freeform designs using found materials such as whalebone and flotsam from beach combing. The peninsula is a private nature reserve but some of the properties can be rented for holidays. Although the island is very small it has a large reputation as a perfect Caribbean holiday experience. Please see my other panoramas for more details on this property and the Moonhole history.

The vaulted interior of Burke House is cool, even in the tropical heat. Tom Johnston, who created the houses at Moonhole was a sailor and knew how to position windows and doors for natural ventilation from the prevailing breezes. He sourced his materials locally and the blue mahoe wood four poster bed was made by local carpenters from the village of Paget Farm. From the windows there are extensive views to the south over the islands of Isle a Quatre, Mustique and Baliceaux. Please see my other panoramas for more details.

The interiors of the Moonhole houses built by Tom Johnston are individual and unusual. Local craftsmen working with materials that came to hand created unconventional spaces and layouts, often without windows or doorways. Trees were never cut down and the buildings seem to have grown organically from their surroundings. The Moonhole peninsula is now a private nature reserve, although some of the house are available as holiday rentals. Please see the other panoramas for more information

Church of St-Pierre de Mont-Rouge in Paris. Very beautiful, very grand, very irresistible to go in.
