Originally mined during the medieval period the complex of tunnels underneath the town of Arras were used during World War 1 as a refuge and hiding place by the Allied armies. Estimated to have been capable of holding ups to 24,000 men there were hospitals, canteens and sleeping quarters at a depth of 20 metres underground where they were safe from bombardment. Forgotten until the 1990's part has been opened up to visitors as a museum and education facility.

This massive 70 metre concrete wall had microphones attached to the curved surfaces and in favourable conditions could pick up the sounds of aircraft up to 24 miles away. Like the two adjacent parabolic mirrors (see my other pano) it to became redundant with the advent of faster aircraft.

Built as an early warning device for aircraft the three concrete “listening ears” at Denge on Dungeness are the best examples of this technology and are Grade 1 listed as Ancient Monuments. They were effective, but the development of faster aircraft made them redundant, as an aircraft would be within sight by the time it had been located.
