Elgin Cathedral, or the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, was once one of the finest churches in Scotland, earning the nickname ‘Lantern of the North’. It was founded in 1224 as the seat of the Bishops of Moray. Its decline began in 1270 when it suffered a damaging fire. It burned again in 1390 after being deliberately torched in an attack by the Wolf of Badenoch. The central tower collapsed at the turn of the 16th century and further damage was inflicted during the Protestant Reformation of 1560, leaving it in such a ruinous state that it was used as a local stone quarry.

NASA's Mars Exploration Program (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS) Sol 425: Autumn on Mars The images for panorama obtained by the rover's 34-millimeter Mast Camera. The mosaic, which stretches about 30,000 pixels width, includes 101 images taken on Sol 425 (October 16, 2013). I forgot to mention previously that, unlike at other NASA Centers, JPL employees work for Caltech, not NASA directly. So they were not as immediately affected by the government shutdown as NASA and USGS employees. Therefore, because many of the people responsible for operating the rovers are at JPL, tactical operations could continue during the shutdown. So progress has been good, and the plan for this weekend includes another SAM measurement and a drive, among other observations. Again, the activities planned for this weekend are primarily constrained by power, but MSL can still do a lot as temperatures drop during the Martian (southern) autumn.
