The ancient town is located in a dominant position on one of the promontories that form the Gulf of Baratti. It preserves the 15th century fortifications by the Lords of Piombino, the Appiani, as evidenced by the dragon symbol of the house located above the entrance to the village.

Scotney Old Castle is a ruined 14th century fortification built on two islands surrounded by a moat. It was intended to defend against French raids during the Hundred Years war. It never saw military action. It was extensively rebuilt as a fortified manor house during the Elizabethan period and remained a family home until the 19th century. Today the castle and wooded estate are run by the National Trust.

The picturesque moated Kirby Muxloe Castle was a fortified manor house built for Lord William Hastings in the early 1480s. It is one of the earliest brickwork castles in England. Today only the gatehouse and West Tower remain largely intact. Unfortunately Lord Hastings never lived to see it completed. He was dramatically seized for alleged treason and executed without trial by command of Richard III.

Die Stadt Starnberg nutzte den Augenblick, als die Werft der Bayerischen Seenschifffahrt etwas weiter "ostlich neu gebaut wurde, um das Grundst"uck des alten Standortes zu kaufen und als B"urgerpark der "Offentlichkeit an dieser Stelle einen freien Zugang zum See zu schaffen. Letzteres hat zwar Verfassungsrang, ist aber am Starnberger See nicht selbstverst"andlich. So hat man jetzt einen sch"onen Blick auf See, Alpen und die m"achtigen Ausflugsschiffe, wenn sie in ihrem Hafen liegen.
