Villena is a small town in the province of Alicante in southern Spain. Its oldest traces of settlement date back to the Paleolithic Age. In 1963 the archaeologist Jos'e Maria Soler found a Bronze Age gold deposit not far from the town, which can be visited in the local archaeological museum. At the end of the 12th century the castle was built by the Almohads and belonged to the Moorish kingdom until the Reconquista 1240. The Reconquista by Jakob I of Arag'on is celebrated annually by the Fiesta de Moros y Christianos.
