A hiker checks the mail on Mailbox Peak, a popular summit destination near North Bend, Washington. It is one of several Snoqualmie Pass gateway peaks. The hike to Mailbox Peak on the old trail, a rough climber’s trail, is notorious for its steepness, tree roots and rocks, and route finding challenges. It climbs 4,000 feet to the summit in about 3 miles from the upper parking lot before the trailhead. A new trail was constructed with more benign switchbacks. It’s still a workout at 5.5 miles each way. I carried the tripod and the rest of my pano gear by rationalizing the weight as part of spring training.
