The Marconi Pass is often a terribly windy place. I've heard of others that hardly saw where they were going due to the wind and snow. The waiting of the last two days had paid off: We had sunshine, blue sky, and almost no wind when we entered the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

They call this pass "the football field". Must be because of that large flat spot just after you climb the last rocky bit. Facing north we saw our destination: the descent into the wide, forrested valley and the ascent to the next pass.

The rain had soaked us. At least it had stopped when we reached our camping spot. Hugo got the fire going in no time. His super power - even with wet wood. I helped to collect wood in the forest and prepared the Yerba Mate to help us warm up again.

We were waiting for the weather to improve, namely for the wind to calm down. We had already camped two nights further down. The wind was still too strong to head over Marconi Pass but good enough to move our camp a bit further up to this spot, close to the Laguna de las 14. We pitched our tents in the well-sheltered spot, ate salchichas and cheese, watched the clouds moving around Fitz Roy and drank Yerba Mate.

The tree formerly known as "Banana Tree". The forward facing, sawn off stump as the base was the "Banana" which arched across the footpath. It was a jump point for the rope swing suspended from the higher branches.
