At a trail junction to the Captain Jack's Stronghold in Lava Beds National Monument near Tulelake, California.  Captain Jack, who was part of the Modoc Indians, used the rugged lava landscape to ward off US Soldiers during the Modoc War of 1872-73.  Fortifications built during the war can still be seen amidst the arid desert floor, as well as unique lava ridges & depressions that served as excellent coverage.

Built at the end of 19th century, the Henrichenburg ship lift was a central element og German canal shipping in the 20th century. Since more than 35 years the ship lift and the builings around are oart of an industrial museum

Solar heaters on the roof of this house produce enough energy to keep the water hot, even in winter. For times without Sun - such as long arctic winter - there is also masonry heater, where burning wood provides the needed heat for the house.
