The city church of Aarau, built between 1471 and 1477 on the site of an older church, is a three-nave basilica, without a transept and with a flat roof, with a choir enclosed on three sides under the same gable. Most of the stones come from the demolished Oberg"osgen Castle and were brought along the Aare. For the new building, master builder Gisel adopted the design of the K"onigsfelden monastery church. After the Reformation in 1528, the twelve altars were removed and the images burned. In 1965/66 the church was restored to its original simplicity and placed under monument protection. It belongs to the Reformed Parish of Aarau, but is also used by the Christian Catholic parish, which is why it is called the City Church. In the west gallery is the musically significant organ from 1962, with a late Baroque organ facade.
