It was bound to happen that someone would write about this game, I’m the one going for it and I’m writing about the PC version.

You’ll either love it or you hate it. Well actually I am yet to find someone who hated the game just those that never got into it.

I first started playing The Sims right from the very beginning when it was owned by Maxis and instantly found the game addictive. I would sit there and play for hours and hours on end. It soon spiraled madly out of control. Anyho the basics behind the game is that you play ‘god’ and control these people called ‘Sims’, you can control nearly ever aspect of their lives, from when they eat to when they pee, if they go to work, what they do, if they can cook or just try to burn the house down. You can turn on free will, a must in my opinion as when you can have up to eight Sims in one house at a time you can’t be sure to tell them all to pee before they wet themselves! So as I’ve just explained you can control their actions but there are ways in which it won’t always work, for example if you tell a sim to “woohoo” with another sim they have just met they will try but get rejected and thus affect their relationship with the new sim. Another aspect of the game allows you to build, decorate and furnish the houses they live in. This was always one of my favorite parts and I could spend hours and hours just building one house, this is another reason why new content is a must as your houses would all look the same otherwise and the game would get increasingly boring.

So at this stage in time you have The Sims 1 with 7 expansion packs, Livin’ Large, House Party, Hotdate, Vacation, Pets, Superstar and Makin’ Magic. Next the Sims 2 was released where your Sims became able to age, one aspect of the original people craved but was never possible to add. This currently has six expansion packs, University, Nightlife, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons Bon Voyage and FreeTime, the seventh expansion pack, Apartment Life, which is apparently the final one, will be coming out by the end of August. There’s also a handful of ‘stuff packs’ which only contain new objects, however if you know anything about hardcore Sims players this as actually a brilliant way for EA to make more cash as the game can get boring if extra content is not added regularly.

There are literally hundreds of Sims custom content sites out there where you can download extra items for the game, I even had one such site, Silken Whisper, which had Sims 1 clothing available for download and near the end a few object recolours. I sadly lost interest in doing this and gave my creations to other sites. There are still people around creating brilliant custom content, my favourite one being simfreaks, where funnily enough some of my creations are.

Well that was a very basic veiw of The Sims. The question now left to ask is this game for you? If you enjoy simulations and think you can enjoy telling Sims what to do for hours on end then yes, it’s also a game for you if you happen to like creating things. And if you have a sadistic side, why is this you ask? Well just tell your simmies to go for a swim and then remove the ladder. Mwhahaha! But honestly what have you got to lose? Last time I checked you could buy the complete collection of the Sims 1 for under £20, considering I bought every expansion pack new costing me a whopping £180 this really is a small price to pay for what I consider an amazing game!
