Seven ancient mysterious places on the planet

Четверг, 19 Апреля 2018 г. 02:37 + в цитатник

On our planet, there are still wonderful and mysterious places that attract tourists like a magnet. More details are in our photo gallery

The mysterious landscapes of our planet have always attracted travelers. Some of them are considered so-called "places of power", and many of them are inexplicably attractive promising immersion in the unknown world. We bring to your attention seven famous places on the planet which to this day are considered the most mysterious.
Teotihuac'anThe oldest city in the Western Hemisphere, located 50 kilometers north-east of Mexico City, is Teotihuac'an. Its age reaches two thousand years. Representatives of the old civilization built stone calendars and were well versed in astronomy. All the buildings of Teotihuac'an are located along the so-called "road of the dead". In the center, there is the main part of the complex, the pyramid of the Feathered Serpent (Quetzalcoatl). One of the important structures of the complex is the pyramids of the Moon and the Sun. At the top of the pyramid of the Sun, erected around 150 BC, there is the so-called Center of Power.
Iron pillar of DelhiAnother unusual ancient monument is the Delhi Pillar, a part of the Qutb Minar architectural complex in the Indian city of Delhi. The uniqueness of this monument lies in the fact that it was made of pure iron almost 1,600 years ago but for all this time has not been corroded. Scientists suggest that the column was assembled from pieces of iron, connected to each other by ancient Indian melting techniques which has long been lost. The reason the Delhi pillar does not rust is due to the special climatic conditions of this territory, experts believe.
StonehengeStonehenge is a unique architectural and archaeological site. It is a composition of stone blocks, megaliths, and triliths weighing from 25 to 82 tons. Scientists consider that the creation of Stonehenge began around 3000 BC and was ended in 2440-2100 BC. The monument is a complex construction which includes arches, two rings of huge stones and an altar stone. Its purpose is still unknown.
Nasca linesThe ancient geoglyphs of the Nasca Plateau are ranked among the greatest mysteries of history. Giant drawings depicting animals and people, as well as amazing lines and geometric shapes stretched for thousands of kilometers across a desert plateau in southern Peru. Experts believe that the drawings could serve as part of a giant astronomical calendar. The Nasca lines were created by a highly developed civilization in the years 300-800. Thanks to a very dry climate, they are perfectly preserved to our days. In 1994 the UNESCO foundation recognized these geoglyphs as the cultural heritage of mankind.
MoaiStudying the statues of Easter Island (or Rapa Nui Island, as the islanders call their homeland), scientists suggest that Moai are tombstones to ancient leaders. Statues were established over their graves in memory of respected ancestors, and the inhabitants believed that they guarded against evil forces. Currently, there are about 900 stones at Rapa Nui. In 1770 they all had fallen. In the second half of XX century, people started renovating statues. Archaeologists assume that the present islanders came to Rapa Nui from Polynesia, South America and from Peru.
Nabta observatoryNabta observatory is recognized one of the most ancient astronomical monuments. It is located in the Sahara desert in Egypt. It was established about 7,000 years ago. It is two thousand years older than the famous Stonehenge. Archaeologists do not exclude that this civilization, which existed in the Sahara 7,000 years ago, contributed to the emergence and development of Egyptian culture. Only 10 monolithic plates with a height of 2.7 m, about 30 oval stones and some kind of a calendar circle remained from the observatory.
Yonaguni pyramidsNear the island of Yonaguni, located in western Japan, in 1985 at a depth of 40 m a huge stone complex with wide platforms was found. They consist of sandstone and covered with ornamentation of rectangles and rhombuses. There is a sheer wall 27 m high, stretching along the whole monument. The researchers found incisions resembling hieroglyphics on the stone blocks. The approximate age of the complex is about 10,000 years. Scientists believe that at that time the monument was located above the surface of the water.

Russian ruble takes nosedive

Среда, 18 Апреля 2018 г. 02:32 + в цитатник

The Russian ruble is in trouble. A new package of sanctions imposed by the United States against Russia put the national currency under pressure and triggered a crash in the Russian stock markets. Though the sanctions were reinforced only by the Americans, the Russian ruble has weakened against other currencies as well. All major currencies strengthened against the ruble. Thus, after the US dollar appreciated to 68 rubles, the euro rose to 78 rubles. And it seems that the situation will remain the same.

The sanctions were reinforced after the recent chemical attack in Syria had occurred. The global community blamed the government forces and Russia for this incident. Washington has already announced plans to discuss new restrictive measures in response to this attack. So, as Russia becomes more isolated, the exchange rate of its national currency slides lower. Currently, the Russian central bank has no reason to interfere and confined itself to technical measures. Under the conditions of high volatility of the national currency, the project proposed by the central bank became relevant. The financial watchdog intends to order all banks to fix the exchange rate right after they get verbal agreement from a client to conduct a transaction.

As already mentioned, the ruble is not the only victim. Sanctions have also dented the Russian stock market. In just a couple of days the Russian tycoons lost almost 16 billion dollars. For example, the personal wealth of Norilsk Nickel CEO Vladimir Potanin decreased by 2.25 billion dollars.

Most unusual projects in the field of raw material recycling

Среда, 18 Апреля 2018 г. 02:22 + в цитатник

It is well known that the natural resources, thanks to which the existence of human civilization is possible, are not limitless: the question of their rational use has already become urgent. In order to learn more about alternative sources of some materials production and modern technologies of raw materials secondary processing, read our photo material.

Construction of power plants based on waste incinerationAt the end of 2017, the option of joint participation of the T plus energy company and Rostek state corporation in the construction of waste incineration plants generating electricity was actively discussed. Further development of this initiative is possible after the government decides to erect incineration plants in the regions where T plus is present, that is, on the sites of existing thermal power plants. Joint enterprises are planned to be built not only in the Middle Urals (Sverdlovsk region) but also in the Ulyanovsk and Nizhny Novgorod regions.
Creating biofuel from the coffee wasteAt the end of 2017, the Bio-bean company started processing coffee waste into biofuel. It plans to turn such waste into a worthy alternative to diesel fuel. So, out of 10 kilograms of used coffee beans, it is quite possible to get 2 liters of fuel. The first objects of the experimental use of the new technology were the famous double-deckers in London where residents drink several cups of an invigorating drink a day.
Making car parts from tomatoesThe Ford has a positive experience of using the car parts obtained from the biological raw materials. The company produces composite materials based on coconut and a foamy filler for automotive seats from soybeans.Plastic internal components of cars can now be obtained from tomato fibers (skin, seeds), The Wall Street Journal writes.
Extraction of fuel pellets from used diapersThe original idea of recycling class A waste in the Primorsky Territory perinatal center is offered by the Japanese company. The project worthing almost 25,000 dollars is devoted to the production of pellets from used diapers. The industrial park in Nadezhdinsky district of Primorye will become the center of recycling waste which is correlated with coking coal in terms of energy intensity. It is expected that such fuel pellets can be used not only in private houses but also in the industrial economy.
Production of biofuel from whiskeyAs reported by BBC News, a successful test drive of a car filled with biobutanol, a fuel made from whiskey waste, was held by the Scottish Celtic Renewables company in the summer of 2017. Receiving a grant from the Scottish authorities amounting to lb9 million ($11.6 million) Celtic Renewables is able to begin production of biofuel on an industrial scale: construction of a demonstration plant is planned to be carried out in the city of Grangemouth, Scotland, by the end of 2018. If the experiment is successfully carried out, the enterprise's capacities will be expanded.
Production of fabrics from citrus wasteIn 2017, the Italian luxury brand Salvatore Ferragamo presented a collection of clothes which was made of the fabric of Orange Fiber, an Italian company that found an unusual solution to the problem of waste from the production of orange juice. The fabric of the presented clothing models was very soft, had a matte shine and resembled silk which, together with the main idea of the brand (making expensive shirts and dresses more environmentally friendly) attracted the attention of the public to the new collection.
Processing of vegetable oil for aviation biofuel productionSingapore Airlines started implementing a technological solution that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the aviation industry. As the Daily Mail writes, in May 2017 Singapore Airlines has undertaken its first sustainable biofuel flight. The biofuel represents a mixture of kerosene and used vegetable oil. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) considers this decision very promising.
Recycling of circuit boardsElectronic devices are a complex mixture of heavy metals and other highly toxic components. It makes them dangerous for burning or landfill disposal. Therefore, the Russian Rosatom proposed an optimal way of recycling such waste, processing them while simultaneously producing a concentrate containing precious and rare-earth metals. The corresponding application for the processing of 5,000 tons of circuit boards per year was published a month ago on the website of the state procurement of the corporation. The specialists of the leading scientific research institute of State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom are planning to engage in the implementation of the promising direction.

Russian ruble takes nosedive

Вторник, 17 Апреля 2018 г. 02:15 + в цитатник

Globalization and Global Inequality: Myths and Reality

Вторник, 17 Апреля 2018 г. 02:03 + в цитатник

As the level of global inequality increased and globalization intensified, experts tried to understand the positive and negative aspects of both phenomena. The main theses of research are presented in our material

According to researches conducted by a number of specialists, global inequality and the globalization engulfing the planet carry more disadvantages than advantages. For example, earlier it was believed that globalization reduces the level of world inequality, but it turned out to be a lie. The second myth is the claim that the rapid growth of income among the rich helps increase the incomes of poor citizens. Experts think that the most dangerous delusion is the possibility of abandoning the development of trade and technology in order to improve the standard of living of the population. Let's try to sort out these myths.
Globalization contributes to deepening inequalityAccording to experts, the expansion of globalization causes the higher level of inequality in the world. The gap in income between the richest and the poorest increases. Most often, analysts consider the inequality of two types: between countries and within states. For example, high economic growth in the PRC and India greatly influenced world income growth resulting in lower inequality between countries. However, within these states, the level of inequality has increased dramatically.
Higher incomes of wealthy people do not contribute to higher living standards of the poorPreviously, experts believed that the increase in income of the rich is necessary to improve the living standards of the poor. As an example, the expansion of the wealthy citizens business with the goal of creating jobs for those in need was cited. However, research refutes this. When comparing Europe and the United States, as well as China and India, it becomes obvious that in countries with a higher level of inequality, the increase in incomes of the poorest citizens has not been recorded.
Globalization and inequality depend on politics, not on trade and technologyAccording to experts, the current political situation directly affects the living standards of the population. The impact of global trade and the development of new technologies is secondary, experts believe. Innovations help develop the global economy, but they have nothing to do with reducing the gap between income levels of the richest and poorest citizens. At the same time, a favorable political climate promotes economic growth rising confidence in the future, analysts emphasize.

UK consumer spending declines in March

Понедельник, 16 Апреля 2018 г. 02:41 + в цитатник

Britain’s consumer spending declined considerably in March, indicating a potential slowdown in the UK economy.

The UK consumer spending growth slowed to 2% in March from 3.8% in February, Barclaycard, the credit and debit card division of Barclays, said.

Heavy snowfall and freezing Siberian weather dubbed "the Beast from the East" caused widespread disruption across the UK in late February and early March. The cold snap hit the services and construction sectors hardest.

“The Beast from the East took its toll on the high street in March, keeping shoppers at home and leading to a slowdown in consumer spending,” Paul Lockstone, managing director at Barclaycard, noted.

However, retail sales grew by 2.3% in March compared with the same period in 2017, according the British Retail Consortium’s report.

Twentieth century marked the beginning of multimillion-dollar deals in the sale of unusual and sometimes insane canvases by avant-garde artists instead of portraits and landscapes of classical art masters. You can find out from our material what are these paintings.

It is difficult to really appreciate these masterpieces of world painting, almost all of the paintings below are created in a unique innovative technique, so their value will only grow with time. Embarrassment, perplexity, doubt in the adequacy of the artist - this is not the whole range of emotions experienced by the unsophisticated spectator. The prices are given in view of the auction commission.
No. 5, Jackson Pollock – $140,000,000The art of Jackson Pollock, an ardent admirer of Pablo Picasso, had a huge impact on the art of the second half of the 20th century becoming an expression of the radical and innovative moods of the younger generation of American nonconformist artists. The artistic effect of spontaneity in his paintings was achieved by splashing aluminum paint or factory varnishes on a canvas placed on the floor and drawing a dense web with the help of multidirectional rope strikes. In 2006, his painting No. 5 was sold for $140 million.
Masterpiece, Roy Lichtenstein – $165,000,000The creative method of Roy Lichtenstein can be described as an imitation of the printing press whose richness of the palette is reduced to several typographic colors. His paintings became the most accurate "mirror of a one-time society" (as the ideologists of pop art described their art). The transformation of the product into an art object is demonstrated in his most famous work, Masterpiece, which went under the hammer for $150 million, though it seems an ordinary comics to the majority of the public.
Nu Couche, Amedeo Modigliani – $170,400,000Nu Couche by Amedeo Modigliani is a portrait of his wife who died immediately after the death of the artist in 1920. The canvas was sold in November 2015 at Christie's auction to Chinese billionaire Liu Yiquan. Most art connoisseurs consider a heroine of the painting as a sensual, aroused woman in her prime who is not afraid to give and demand physical pleasure.
Les Femmes d'Alger, Picasso – $179,400,000The painting by Pablo Picasso was sold at Christie's auction in New York in 2015, 11 minutes after the start of the auction. This painting is the culmination of a series of 15 works on Women of Algiers completed by Picasso, inspired by the 19th century Spanish great Eugene Delacroix.
No:6 (Violet, Green and Red), Mark Rothko – $186,000,000The authorship and genius of Mark Rothko's style were proved in the Supreme Court of America by his descendants, although the artist himself did not like to consider himself a part of a fashionable at that time group of abstractionists. The author did not give a distinct title to most of his paintings giving viewers the opportunity to fantasize about what is depicted in the picture - just horizontal stripes of bright colors or something more.As a result of court proceedings, most of the paintings sold by Rothko during his lifetime for a pittance were returned to the heirs, and the name of the artist entered the list of the ten most talented artists of the 20th century.
No. 17A, 1948, Jackson Pollock – $200,000,000The dominant subconscious of Jackson Pollock, an ideologue and leader of abstract expressionism, is emphasized by the technique of dripping paint in his painting No. 17A. In 2015, this canvas of the founder of the "action painting" was sold for an astronomical sum to the American billionaire Kenneth Griffin.
The Card Players, Paul Cezanne – $250,000,000Restrained in emotions Cezanne created a series of paintings The Card Players differing in size and number of players depicted. The most "gloomy" version made a record at the auction of 2011.The royal family of Qatar bought this canvas for a whopping $250 million. Other paintings belong to the art museums in Europe and America.
When Will You Marry?, Paul Gauguin – $210,000,000In February 2015, a new record was broken when the organization Qatar Museums, engaged in the acquisition of works of art for the museums of the emirate, gave for the painting of Gauguin $300 million. At the time of the auction, the canvas belonged to the Swiss collector Rudolf Shtekelin, before that, more than 50 years it was exhibited in the Museum of Fine Arts of the city of Basel, Switzerland.
Interchange, Willem de Kooning – $300,000,000The works of Willem de Kooning, who belonged to the school of abstract expressionism, participated in thousands of exhibitions when the artist was still alive. Now they are exhibited in many art galleries around the world. Perhaps his painting Interchange is puzzling with its rather strange technique of execution, resembling an oil painting in all directions, but there are those who think differently, otherwise how to explain the fact that in 2016 it was sold for a decent amount.
Salvator Mundi, Leonardo da Vinci – $450,300,000Despite the high painting skills seen in some details of the image of Christ, in the world community there is no common position about who created this canvas, Leonardo da Vinci himself or one of his disciples. In 2017, Christie's auction house, which attracted the attention of the most affluent public, managed to raise the starting price of the picture Salvator Mundi, equal to a modest $100 million, to a fabulous $400 million, largely due to the positioning of the lot as Leonardo's last work left in private hands. The identity of the new owner of the masterpiece is kept secret.

UK consumer spending declines in March

Пятница, 13 Апреля 2018 г. 02:10 + в цитатник

World's Greatest Museums

Пятница, 13 Апреля 2018 г. 02:07 + в цитатник

Museums go hand in hand with modern technology and continue to delight connoisseurs of art around the world. Anyone not indifferent to artifacts, paintings or sculptures can navigate in a virtual collection, and if desired, visit the museums in real life. What museums are worthy of your attention, read in our material.

Despite the rather skeptical attitude towards museums which has recently been observed in modern society, they do not even think of emptying and closing. Internet technologies that have conquered the world seem to be good for them: museum virtual representations are opened, and the computer has long since become a working tool.
Egyptian Museum (Cairo, Egypt)The Egyptian Museum has a huge number of exhibits (art objects, manuscripts, scrolls, and household items) representing the history and art of Egypt of different eras of several thousand years BC. It is breathtaking when you see mummies of the pharaohs, sarcophagi of the priests, famous treasures of the tomb of Tutankhamun, sculptures of the pharaoh Amenhotep III and his wife Tiaa, and others. Everything is ancient and mysterious, especially considering the fact that the purpose of many artifacts is still unknown, and modern science cannot explain the impact of some of them on the human body.
Louvre (Paris, France)Originally the Louvre Palace, the site of the world-famous museum of France, was a medieval fortress. Subsequently (especially during Napoleon's time) the building was repeatedly renamed and expanded, but still, its exhibition area is rather modest and does not allow to exhibit everything that would be interesting to visitors. For this reason, and also because of the exceptional world value of most of the exhibits, only a tenth of them are displayed in the halls of the museum.
Uffizi Gallery (Florence, Italy)According to the original plan, the Uffizi Gallery was to become a spacious palace that would have assembled all the administrative services of Florence 16th-17th centuries in its territory. However, the popular at that time portrait painting initiated the formation of private collections later joined by the works of Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo and other great masters.
Vatican MuseumsThe world's largest collection of historical and artistic values can be seen in the Vatican Museums, a gigantic complex reminiscent of the state in the state. The Vatican is tiny in size and has fabulous cultural treasures: 60,000 manuscripts of the Vatican Library, the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's Frescoes, the archaeological artifacts of the Etruscan and Egyptian Museums, the gallery of geographical maps, the Bramante Chamber Scaffold, the Raphael Chamber, etc.
Prado Museum (Madrid, Spain)The connoisseurs of European art will undoubtedly like the Prado Museum where the paintings of four European schools, Spanish, Italian, German and Flemish, are exhibited. The paintings collection creation in Spain was initiated by Charles V Habsburg who carefully approached the selection of exhibits. Among them are canvases of Bosch, Botticelli, Santi, da Vinci and others. The Prado Museum leads an active life: often enough, exhibition collections from other famous museums of the world are brought here, or, conversely, the Spanish collection goes on a journey.
State Art Museum of Amsterdam (Amsterdam, Netherlands)The Art Museum in Amsterdam, open to public visits in 1815, 70 years later moved to another building and still remains there. A recent large-scale restoration has benefited him: artistic and historical collections, as well as collections of drawings, engravings, and photographs, have gained fresh momentum. The central object of the art exhibition is Rembrandt's "The Night Watch", a painting that caused the reconstruction of the building in 1906 because it was too large for the museum's halls.
British Museum (London, the UK)The exposition of the British Museum, collected in the 17th century from three collections, was originally located in an aristocratic mansion in the Bloomsbury area. Some of the exhibits of Greek and Egyptian origin that got to England under mysterious circumstances are still an apple of discord between the countries. In the 19th century, part of the museum's collections was transferred to South Kensington, and at the beginning of the 20th century the British Museum was replenished with collections of Middle Eastern art (Mesopotamia).
Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, the USA)The Metropolitan Museum was created as a national art gallery in the second half of the 19th century with the funds of businessmen and patrons. Its first exhibits were paintings by European artists brought by the organizers from Paris and Brussels.Americans are very proud of this museum and with the inherent patriotism continue to replenish the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, mainly by buying paintings that were previously in private collections. Thus, the canvases of such Western European artists as Titian, Rembrandt, Botticelli, Goya, El Greco and others are adornments of the museum.
National Archaeological Museum of Athens (Athens, Greece)The largest museum in Greece appeared in Athens after the city became the capital of the state. Until then, the National Archaeological Museum was located on the island of Aegina. The basis of its exposition is collections of sculptures and ceramics (ones of the richest in the world) found during centuries-old archaeological excavations. You can read about the progress of these digs in the books, scientific works, and publications in the unique archaeological library located here in the museum.
Hermitage (St. Petersburg, Russia)The collection of the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the best gallery in Russia and one of the most famous art museums in the world, includes works by world-famous masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt and many others. More than 2.7 million exhibits located in the seven buildings of the museum represent the art of different epochs from many countries of the world, from Ancient Egypt to Europe of the beginning of the 20th century.
