Holy Fire Easter ceremony in Jerusalem: seven curious facts

Четверг, 16 Апреля 2020 г. 02:14 + в цитатник

Easter is a movable holiday. This year, Catholics celebrate Easter on April 12, while the Orthodox Сhurch on April 19. On this day, Christians pay special attention to their spiritual values as they mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb on the third day after his crucifixion. Orthodox Christians consider the Holy Fire a miracle that occurs every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Every Christian is allowed to touch the flames as the Holy Fire supposedly does not burn the flesh. Find out seven other peculiar facts about the ceremony in this article

Holy Fire occurs every Easter Saturday
The descent of the Holy Fire every Holy Saturday is the miraculous event that takes place each year on the eve of Orthodox Easter. In 2020, it will be held on April 18 since Resurrection Sunday will take place on April 19.

It takes roots in early Christianity
This time-honored tradition dates back to the beginning of Christianity. The descent of the Holy Fire is first mentioned in the 4th century AD. Curiously enough, the Holy Fire may appear within five minutes but sometimes Christians await it around several hours. Before the descent of the Holy Fire, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is illuminated by flashes of light.

Church of Holy Sepulchre opens gate to thousands of people
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre where the Holy Fire ceremony takes place is very spacious. It is able to accommodate 10 thousand believers. What is more, the church symbolizes the unity of various branches of Christianity as five Orthodox churches - Armenian, Greek, Coptic, Syrian, and Ethiopian- hold services there. Catholic masses also occur in the church. The keepers of the keys to the church are Muslims.

Pilgrims light 33 candles
Before the appearance of the Holy Fire, the pilgrims who gather in the church hold 33 candles in their hands. Each candle symbolizes every year of Christ’s life on Earth. In the tomb of Jesus Christ, the Holy Fire descends on a lamp of olive oil and 33 candles that are placed in the tomb by the priests.

Priests are searched before entering Jesus’s tomb
Before the descent of the Holy Fire, priests take off all their clothes and remain in their inner cassocks. Then, they are awaiting the appearance of the Holy Fire inside Jesus Christ’s tomb. During the whole procedure, the tomb remains sealed.

Holy Fire ascends within whole year
One of the most stunning things about the Holy Fire is that it flares up throughout the year. However, the Holy Fire that descended on Orthodox Easter is brought annually by special flights to churches in Russia, Greece, Ukraine, Serbia, Georgia, Moldova, Belarus, Poland, and Bulgaria.

Holy Fire possess miraculous qualities
The Holy Fire is a true miracle of the church. It has several unique qualities that science has failed to explain. Believers who were able to touch the fire immediately after its descent note that the flame burned neither the skin nor the hair within the first 10 minutes. Notably, in the entire history of the descent of the Holy Fire, it has never caused a fire. Many people have tried to solve this mystery albeit with no success.

Samsung's first-quarter profit likely to beat expectations

Среда, 15 Апреля 2020 г. 06:35 + в цитатник

South Korean tech giant Samsung expects a rise in its profits for the three months that ended in March. The company said that its first-quarter operating profit would be 6.4 trillion Korean won (5.23 billion US dollars), up 2.7 percent compared to the same period last year. The result is likely to exceed the 6.2 trillion won estimate ($5.05 billion). Besides, the company expects its consolidated sales for this period to grow by 5 percent to 55 trillion won. So, Samsung may become the first major technology company to report revenue growth in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. This rise in profits is mainly contributed by buoyant demand for memory chips and other components. The export of semiconductor chips allows the manufacturer not only to stay afloat in this challenging time but also to increase its revenues. According to experts, Samsung's memory chip demand will continue to spike despite a possible lower demand for consumer electronics. In conditions of mass self-isolation, the rising trend of working from home forces companies to full up their inventories in order to expand their own capabilities. Samsung’s first quarter report will be akin to a touchstone for the rest of the market, providing an early preview of how badly the COVID-19 outbreak has hit companies and their global supply chains.

World's longest gas pipelines

Среда, 15 Апреля 2020 г. 03:00 + в цитатник

The largest natural gas fields are located in hard-to-reach places. Therefore, with the help of pipelines, gas transportation is carried out far quicker.

In our article, you will find out about pipelines which are over several thousand kilometers in length

Natural gas is used as a source of energy for cooking, heating, electricity generation as well as producing various oils and synthetic chemicals. In addition, it reduces dependence on heavily polluting coal and plays an important role in the development of gas-consuming regions.

Nord Stream Pipeline – 1,224 km
It is the longest subsea gas pipeline in the world which connects Russia to the countries of Western Europe, running across the Baltic Sea to Germany (from Vyborg to Greifswald).
The annual capacity of two strings is 55 billion cubic meters of gas. The first string of Nord Stream was put into service in 2011, while the second one – in 2012. Nord Stream 2, a new gas export pipeline, similar in the route, length, and projected capacity to the one in operation is expected to enter service in the near future.

Yamal-Europe Pineline - over 2,000 km
Yamal-Europe pipeline is one of two Russian gas pipelines included in the top ten. It runs across four countries: Russia (402 km), Belarus (575 km), Poland (683 km), and Germany. The gas pipeline constructed in 1999 ensures an expanded uninterrupted supply of Russian gas to Europe, reaching an annual design capacity of 32.9 billion cubic meters in 2006.
The trunkline includes 14 compressor stations. The pipeline runs from the Torzhok gas transmission hub in the Tver Oblast. The westernmost point is the Mallnow compressor station near Frankfurt an der Oder.

Transmed – 2,475 km
Thanks to the Trans-Mediterranean pipeline, natural gas delivery stretches from Algeria and other regions of North Africa via Tunisia to Sicily and thence to northern Italy. An extension of the pipeline delivers gas to Slovenia. A 96-kilometer trunkline from Sicily to Tunisia runs across the Mediterranean Sea at a water depth of 1,500 meters.
The first phase of the pipeline was constructed in 1978-1983, while the second phase - in 1994. The current capacity of the Trans-Mediterranean pipeline exceeds 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

Iran-Turkey Pipeline – 2,577 km
The pipeline running from Tabriz via Erzurum to Ankara was initially supposed to be part of the Pars pipeline and connect Iran's South Pars gas field to European consumers. However, sanctions impeded the implementation of its construction.
Its current capacity is 14 billion cubic meters per year. So, Iran has an opportunity to enter the European market by 2020, exporting up to 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year (with a total export capacity of 35 billion cubic meters per year).

Rockies Express (REX) - 2,702 km
The giant Rockies Express high-pressure natural gas pipeline launched in 2009 consists of three sections running parallel to one another. It passes through eight states from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to Ohio.
REX constructed in 2009 is the second largest gas export pipeline in North America (after Tennessee Gas Pipeline). Its capacity is 37 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Bolivia-Brazil Pipeline - 3,150 km
Bolivia-Brazil is the longest natural gas pipeline in South America. It consists of two stretches with a length of 1,418 km and 1,165 km put into service in 1999–2000.
Annually, about 11 billion cubic meter of natural gas is transported from Bolivia to the south-east regions of Brazil.

Tennessee Gas Pipeline - 3,300 km
The Tennessee pipeline was the first main natural gas pipeline in the United States.
This pipeline constructed in 1944 consists of five stretches delivering natural gas from the Gulf of Mexico via Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Pennsylvania to West Virginia, New Jersey, New York, and New England. Its annual capacity is up to 22-25 billion cubic meters of gas.

Urengoy-Uzhhorod Pipeline – 4,451 km
This main export gas pipeline was constructed in 1983 to supply natural gas from the northern part of Western Siberia to the countries of Central and Western Europe.
The gas pipeline split into three branches crosses the Ural Mountains and more than 600 rivers including the Ob, Volga, Don, and Dnieper. It has 42 compressor stations. Nine of them are located in Ukraine which accounts for 1,160 km of the trunkline. The actual capacity of the pipeline is 28 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

Central Asia-Center Gas Pipeline System (CAC) – 5,000 km
The Central Asia-Center gas pipeline is used to transit natural gas from Turkmenistan via Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia to non-CIS countries.
The cooperation of these states increased the capacity (up to 80 billion cubic meters of gas per year) and enhanced the reliability of the CAC.
The first section of the pipeline was launched back in 1967. By 1985, the CAC was a multi-line system pipeline system running across the largest rivers of the region (Amu-Darya, Volga, Ural, Oka).

Turkmenistan-China Gas Pipeline - over 7 thousand km
The giant Turkmenistan-China pipeline system makes it possible to transport natural gas from Central Asia via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to China.
This trunkline was put into service in 2009. Its current capacity is about 65 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The pipeline supplies gas extracted in the fields of Southern Yoloten-Osman and Dovletabad in Turkmenistan.

Edible insects to be sold at EU grocery stores soon

Вторник, 14 Апреля 2020 г. 04:06 + в цитатник

Nutritionists are serious about introducing a new protein source in the diet of the Europeans. In a couple of weeks, the EU food safety authority is widely expected to approve using edible insects in the food industry. In fact, some producers are certain that outdated food technologies will benefit from “novel” ingredients such as whole or ground mealworms, locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers. They are all safe for human nutrition. Edible insects are sure to find fans among health-conscious consumers. So, the question is to authorize their sales and mass production in the EU countries. Demand generates supply. “We reckon these authorizations will be a breakthrough for the sector so we are looking for those authorizations quite impatiently. They are taking the necessary time, they are very demanding on information, which is not bad. But we believe that once we have the first novel food given a green light from EFSA that will have a snowball effect,” said Christophe Derrien, the secretary general of the International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed. Interestingly, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Finland found some loopholes in the EU legislation long ago. Their national regulators permitted the production of insect-based food and its sales in supermarkets. 500 tons of such food is produced in those countries every year.

US dumps idea of high tariffs on imported oil

Понедельник, 13 Апреля 2020 г. 05:53 + в цитатник

The US has taken advantage of the collision between Saudi Arabia and Russia. Having unleashed the oil price war against the most powerful rival, Saudi Arabia slashed its crude prices for regular buyers. The US immediately pumped up all available commercial and strategic inventories with cheap crude oil. Afterwards, Washington decided to exert its influence to stem turmoil in the global oil market. The US leader even made an attempt to mediate between Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Following a joint online conference between the parties, Donald Trump expressed confidence that Saudi Arabia and Russia would strike a deal in a few days. Oil prices were plumbing new depths for a few weeks, tumbling to the lows unseen since early 2000-es. Having replenished oil tanks in full, the White House was even serious about slapping high tariffs on imported oil, but they gave up this idea. Indeed, amid current low oil prices, neither Saudi Arabia nor Russia would find buyers in the American market. Thus, tariffs on imported oil make no sense.

A collapse of oil quotes convinced all oil major oil exporters that the only solution would be a new pact on oil production cuts. The emergency OPEC+ online meeting was scheduled for April 9, 2020. The event ended with a new historic oil production cut agreement as the COVID-19 pandemic saps demand for crude oil. While oil is trading at record lows, some top energy companies such as ExxonMobil, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Total, and Equinor have increased debt by $32 billion. They found support from the Federal Reserve as the regulator revived the crippled debt market with its stimulus programs. Now the companies can rely on leveraged funds.

Mysterious strategic sites: 5 ghost cities in China

Понедельник, 13 Апреля 2020 г. 02:07 + в цитатник

China will be in the center of people's attention for a long time due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 across the globe which originated in the country. Nowadays, the focus shifted on Europe. However, China still remains the place of several unsolved mysteries. Thus, experts consider the construction of the so-called ghost towns in China to be one of these inexplicable phenomena. Read about five ghost cities located in China in our article

Ordos City
This Chinese megacity is considered to be the most popular ghost town in the world. There is a great number of mineral deposits around Ordos. Although real estate developments in Ordos were sold during the contraction phase, people have been reluctant to move in. The city is able to accommodate about 1 million residents. However, the population density remains low and does not reach 10%.

Kangbashi
This metropolis is recognized as one of the largest sparsely populated cities in China. According to experts, the city is able to accommodate more than 1 million people. Kangbashi was constructed to become a zone intended for the urbanization of peasants from nearby villages. However, the reality was different. Currently, only 30,000 people live in the city. No increase in the population is expected in the future.

Tianducheng
In the Chinese suburb of Guangzhou, there is one more ghost town, which is significantly different from the rest. Tianducheng resembles a mini open-air museum. There are copies of many Parisian attractions, including the Eiffel Tower, in the city. Initially, Tianducheng was designed to accomodate 10,000 people. Nowadays, only 20% of residents live in the city.

Nanhui New City
This megacity is located near Shanghai. Nanhui New City was slated to become a “mini- Hong Kong”, as well as the largest trading port and tourist center. However, the city was almost uninhabited up until recently. Recently, many universities have been opened in the city. Currently, more than 100,000 students live and study in Nanhui New City.

Thames Town
Thames Town, a unique tourist attraction, is ranked fifth on the list of top 5 Chinese ghost towns. The city’s architecture features the style of a typical English town. There are many neat beautiful houses no more than three floors high. The city can accommodate about 10,000 people. However, Thames Town remains only a tourist attraction. The city is a favorite place for photo shoots among the Chinese, Europeans and Americans.

Bank of Russia eventually decides to save RUB

Пятница, 10 Апреля 2020 г. 03:31 + в цитатник

Despite the Kremlin’s interest in the weak national currency, the Bank of Russia eventually decided to do something to prop up the ruble which had been trapped at historic lows against the greenback. Within a framework of forex interventions, the regulator notably increased sell-offs of US dollars in the domestic currency market. In a few days, the central bank converted $200 million to 16 billion rubles. According to the information on the Bank of Russia’s website, the amount of dollars to be sold amid forex interventions has been sharply raised by 20%. This monetary policy measure is widely used by other central banks to support a weak national currency. Indeed, thanks to the artificial buoyant demand the ruble has been able to regain some of losses. Nevertheless, full recovery of the ruble is still out of the question amid the lack of fundamentals. The currency has been weighed down by Russia’s withdrawal from the OPEC+ pact on oil production cuts. The ruble is very sensitive to any changes in oil quotes. Amid the oil price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia, the ruble is doomed to failure. There is no hope for growth of oil quotes until the rivals come to terms. Meanwhile, Urals, the domestic oil grade and the main source of Russia’s budget revenues, is trading at $13 per barrel which is cheaper than the European black mineral oil. Last time when the Urals price slumped to such a record low was in 1999. Afterwards, the price climbed over 30%. However, even that considerable rise did not help the ruble recover its previous strength.

Trump’s announcement boosts Russian ruble

Четверг, 09 Апреля 2020 г. 09:42 + в цитатник

When investors were gripped by fears that the Russian ruble would fall deeper, help came from unexpected sources. The ruble inched up after the US president said that he was ready to help Russia and Saudi Arabia to open negotiations. The fact is that Vladimir Putin failed to come to an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s leader. Russia’s president had to ask Donald Trump to convince Saudi Arabia to continue negotiations with Russia. As a result, Donald Trump made an announcement on the subject, expressing hope that the two countries would reach a compromise. Both oil and currency markets advanced amid his speech. Thus, the Russian ruble advanced against the US dollar and the euro. The US dollar dropped below 77 rubles whereas the euro declined below 83 rubles. "I expect and hope that they will be cutting back approximately 10 million barrels, and maybe substantially more", the US president said. Such an announcement could have boosted the ruble even more. However, the Russian president accused Saudi Arabia of leaving the OPEC deal. As a result, Saudi Arabia said that the accusation was "fully devoid of truth" and refused to resume negotiations. Of course, there is a possibility that the Russian national currency will lose ground again.

Top-5 pysanka coins of Canada

Четверг, 09 Апреля 2020 г. 02:16 + в цитатник

Some coins rather than being a means of payment are valued for their aesthetic qualities. Usually, such coins are not put into circulation as they are designed for museum exhibitions or sold for private collections. In this article, we are going to tell you about Canada's pysanka coins. These are colorful and original Easter egg-shaped coins that pay tribute to the Ukrainian culture. Find out five most unique Canadian pysanka coins in our photo gallery

2016 Canadian traditional Ukrainian pysanka coin
The first silver 20 CAD coin dedicated to the Ukrainian Pysanka was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint 4 years ago. The issue of the coin was timed to the 125th anniversary of the first Ukrainian settlement in Canada. The design of the coin imitates traditional motifs of Ukrainian folk art. Every color of the Easter egg-shaped pysanka carries a deeper meaning that reminds its recipient about the Easter holidays.

2017 Canadian traditional Ukrainian pysanka fine silver coin
Pysanka coin issued in 2017 represents another variant of the traditional Ukrainian ornament on the pysanka depicting Easter motifs. The key elements of the pysanka coin are the golden wheat. The frame contains stars and water as symbols of good luck and well-being. The face value of the coin is 20 CAD with a low mintage set to just 5,000 pieces.

2018 Canadian traditional Ukrainian Easter golden spring pysanka coin
The gold plating of the 20 CAD coin featured the Ukrainian style covers the obverse and reverse of this coin. The sunrays depicted on the obverse symbolize the arrival of spring. Flowers included in the ornament underlay the beauty of nature. The sun and stars are located in the central part of the coin. Small triangles pictured around the perimeter of the coin epitomize fire, air, and water.

2019 Canadian Vegreville pysanka coin
This coin has a very peculiar history of creation. In 1975, Vegreville, a town in central Alberta, Canada, unveiled an amazing monument in honor of the centenary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Its shape resembles a giant Ukrainian Pysanka weighing 2,500 kg. Thus, this 2019 $20 fine silver pysanka egg coin is based on the world-famous landmark in Vegreville, Alberta. Presently, many people from Ukraine live in Vegreville. The pysanka monument is the main attraction of the city and a symbol of Canada's multicultural history. Beneath the giant egg, there is an inscription in 4 languages: English, German, French, and Ukrainian.

2019 Canadian eternal blessing pysanka coin
An extraordinary gold pysanka coin with a face value of 250 CAD was created by Dave Melnichuk, a Canadian artist of Ukrainian origin. The ornament of this coin includes a number of multi-layered elements: for example, waves and dots symbolize Canada’s official motto U Mari Usque Ad Mare that translates as “From Sea to Sea.” In the center of the coin, there is a high wooden temple that serves as a symbol of spiritual rebirth. Mintage is set to just 250 coins worldwide.

Investment banks assess risks looming over stock market

Среда, 08 Апреля 2020 г. 08:03 + в цитатник

While the coronavirus pandemic is shaking the global markets, experts have no option but stand by and watch the situation. The currency strategists of the largest investment banks are trying to figure out whether the market has bottomed out or there is still room for maneuver. Experts at JP Morgan Chase & Co and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., the two largest banking groups, have made their assessments of the current situation. JP Morgan analysts believe that the risky assets are being weighed down by the COVID-19 outbreak. The negative effects on this group of financial instruments are expected to be aggravated due to the recession gripping economies around the world. Experts at JP Morgan consider that the authorities have made every effort to stabilize and revive the economy, including different fiscal stimulus programmes. However, this did not help them turn the tide. Strategists at JP Morgan say that risky assets, excepting oil and some emerging market currencies, have hit their low points. Most of these currencies are likely to trade higher in the second quarter of 2020, so the bank recommends investors buy oversold assets. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. experts do not share the view of their colleagues from JP Morgan. The bank sees the market falling in the next few weeks. Nevertheless, the experts believe that it is too early to talk about bottoming out. According to Goldman Sachs, a sustainable stock market rally requires a number of conditions such as a slower rate of the novel coronavirus spread, a reduction in investor positions, and well-coordinated fiscal stimulus measures. Other banking experts are refraining from making projections. Some of them suggest closely monitoring current developments and not rushing to purchase any assets. Experts emphasize that the bearish market sentiment rarely leads to massive sell-off without repeated testing of the bottom.
