German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned US President Donald Trump that the country is ready for any measures after Trump’s threats to introduce large tariffs on auto imports from the EU. European cars are quite a hard blow: it is not about simple steel and aluminum, it is about the brand now. The American brands are under threat now too: such well-known branded products as bourbon, jeans, and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Oil price jumps by $10 on Trump’s tweet |
Once again Donald Trump changes market sentiment with a single tweet. Not every official can boast of such an influence exerted through social networking services. For example, in Russia no official or celebrity can make the ruble or oil prices rise through tweeting.
However, the US President is a different story. A mere tweet pushed the oil price up by 10 dollars. “The OPEC Monopoly must remember that gas prices are up & they are doing little to help. If anything, they are driving prices higher as the United States defends many of their members for very little $’s. This must be a two way street. REDUCE PRICING NOW!” Trump wrote on Twitter. This was enough to send oil prices upwards. Such a reaction of the market encouraged crude producers, especially Iran, over which US sanctions are looming. “Your tweets have increased the prices by at least $10. Please stop this method,” Iranian OPEC Governor Hossein Kazempour Ardebili was quoted as saying by a news agency.
However, it is difficult to predict how long prices will be rising. Foreign ministers of five other member-countries of the Iran Nuclear Deal held a meeting with Iranian officials in Vienna, where they were looking for the way of keeping the deal after the US’s exit from it. It is unclear for now whether Iran will be able to maintain its presence in the market.

More and more participants are willing to withdraw from the Nord Stream 2 project. However, the Russian media presents every new obstacle with remarkable optimism. According to the Kremlin’s rhetoric, Russia can handle construction of the gas pipeline to Europe on its own with the utmost ease.
Denmark is another country which could quit partnership with Russia. Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has submitted a draft bill to the parliament to block the implementation of the Danish part of the pipeline project. The bill will include a new procedure in standard processing of applications for international projects. This is assessment of foreign policy. Thus, Denmark voices concern whether the pipeline can run through the NATO country’s area because of security reasons. EU companies are well aware that politics is an integral part of any commercial or economic project. However, such developments cannot darken the optimistic mood of Gazprom. The Russian gas giant will go on even if remaining participants like Germany and Finland also abandon the project. “If Denmark’s government does not greenlight building the pipeline near its coast, we will have to change the route. The most probable scenario is to build the pipeline in the international waters northward off Denmark,” Nord Stream 2 AG Finance Director commented on the developments. No application for construction work in the international waters has been submitted yet.
The board of Nord Stream 2 AG does not see any reasons to worry. Perhaps, the project will meet the deadline. The company can make a flexible choice of when and where to build thanks to five available vessels. While awaiting permission from Denmark, Nord Stream 2 AG is free to alter a construction scheme and will complete this section later. This could take almost a month. The pipeline workers lay 3 – 3.5 kilometers a day. So, Denmark’s withdrawal will not cause a serious delay and expenses.

Chinese shares falling amid trade risks |
The trade war has not started yet, but Beijing is already suffering first losses. The Chinese shares and stock indices are falling. The Shanghai Composite has lost over 20 percent since January. The shares are dropping in price as the weak yuan increases the value of companies’ debt in the US dollars.

Shanghai Composite could fall at least another 10 percent,” Sun Jianbo, China Vision Capital president in Beijing, said. War is a very expensive event, only few can afford it: those with funds and those who have nothing to lose. China is neither. The nation’s stock market has already lost 1.8 trillion dollars since January and this is not the end.
Besides, Americans are skillful strategists. In China, a new 5-year plan has started, ahead of which basic principles of the development scheme were introduced. It is impossible to imagine a person without a mobile phone nowadays, while it is quite easy to imagine profits of mobile network operators. The volumes are impressive. That’s why authorities of countries treat their domestic mobile market so carefully, refusing access to it for foreign companies.
A vivid example of such a situation is a ban on operation of China Mobile in the United States for reasons of national security. One can say nothing to such a strong argument. “After significant engagement with China Mobile, concerns about increased risks to U.S. law enforcement and national security interests were unable to be resolved. Therefore, the Executive Branch of the U.S. government <…> recommends that the FCC deny China Mobile’s Section 214 license request,” National Telecommunications and Information Administration Statement reads. The US officials agree with NTIA’s experts, threatening to limit commercial operation of local companies due to their cooperation with the Chinese operator.
China Mobile is the world’s largest mobile phone network with over 899 million subscribers. The corporation applied for a license through the Federal Communications Commission back in 2011. After the news of the US refusal, the shares of the operator lost 2.6 percent in value sinking to the four-year low.

Apple and Samsung settle patent dispute out of court |
Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd eventually settled a seven-year patent dispute. Two hi-tech giants used to accuse each other of violating the copyright and patent legislation and even sued for damages. However, this dispute has been the most painstaking.
Interestingly, the parties managed to resolve the multi-million dollar dispute out of court. Back in 2012, Apple Inc. submitted a claim to Samsung, charging its South Korean rival with stealing several technological solutions devised for iPhone. Samsung allegedly employed them in Galaxy smartphones. The US corporation estimated its losses at $1 billion and demanded compensation. Having failed to collect this amount, Apple Inc. was ready to reach a compromise, claiming $290 million. The company had bad luck again. After a short pause, Apple Inc. resumed its complaint in 2015, demanding $548 million before legal proceedings are launched. This time, Samsung again asserted its interests. Remarkably, the South Korean manufacturer did not deny its fault, but estimated the fact of borrowing technologies at $28 million. Terms of settlement are unavailable for the public as both parties evaded comments on which amount they agreed.
It is too early to say that the patent war is over. The electronic giants have been involved in a series of patent infringement lawsuits in different countries. By the way, according to court verdicts they both have been found guilty of copying technologies and design and penalized.
