ER's John Carter is one of the series' most endearing and invigorating characters - in a way, he has formed the core of the series, introducing the audience to the various practices in the hospital while he himself develops from sub-intern to resident. In (almost) every circumstance he has appeared to be good-natured and hard-working, intelligent, insightful and idealistic - however occasionally he has let his enthusiasm carry him away, and has (a couple of times) acted in an inappropriately frivolous fashion.

In recent times he has had the opportunity to show his mettle coping with the effects of an industrial chemical spillage - he now appears considerably more assured than on his first appearance, and he also appears to finally be having some luck with women.
