Julian McMahon’s biorhthms are definitely up. For while he may be recovering from a nasty flu at the moment, his career is feeling just grand, thank you.
The strikingly handsome Australian actor just laughs when it is suggested that he’s really hitting his stride in 2007, starring in three high-profile films this year as well as the hugely popular F/X series “Nip/Tuck.”
“I’ve been working for a long time, you know? So for me, success is always surpirins,” he chuckles. “No matter what place you get to, success has so many unpredictables put into it.”
However it is pretty easy to predict the success of those upcoming films, starting with “Premonition,” the new supernatural thriller that co-stars Sandra Bullock along wiht McMahon. Opening in mid-March, the fim follows the lives of a family during a fateful week, a week that plays out in a very strange and inexplicable manner.
“There’s a married couple, the husband gets hit by a truck. He dies, and the next day he’s not dead anymore,” McMahon explains.
Sounds odd, right? Right.
“I kind of feel like it’s one of those movies that should just never be explained,” he adds. “It’s kind of a fine line when you’re jumping days and timelines, and somebody’s alive and somebody’s not alive. It’s really kind of surreal, and to really understand it, I don’T think there’s a real possibility of that.”
What McMahon found easy to understand about “Premonition” was that it was a real opportunity for him to do something completely opposite from Dr. Christian Troy, the amoral plastic surgeon that he has played so convincingly on “Nip/Tuck” for the past four seasons.
“I felt like it was an opportunity to play something I really hadn’t had the opportunity to play before, and a character that people never see me as. Nobody ever casts me as a family man, god knows why not, because I am one.”
“And ultimately it was Sandy (Bullock) who made me want to be in the film. Definitely, there’s no doubt about that I really felt like I could see the two of us together in those roles, as husband and wife, I felt like we fit quite well together.”
While that choice was infused with the desire to change things up, doing “Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silversurfer,” McMahon’s other big film coming this summer, was the result of opportunity knocking a second time.
“Going back to Dr.Doom in ‘Fantastic Four’ was important to me,” he remembers.”I was contracted to do it, but there was talk of me not being able to do it because of my commitments with ‘Nip/Tuck.’ But they are both Fox, so there was a bit of political pull involved, and I got to do them both. I’ve gotta be honest, when there was talk of me not being able to do it, I started getting really kind of pissy. About the fact that somebody else might be taking over my Dr.Doom - I just wouldn’t have it!”
But that meant a workload that most people would shudder to consider.
“I shot ‘Premonition’ for the first five months last year, then I went right to ‘Nip/Tuck’ and ‘Fantastic Four,’ I shot them at the same time,” he grimaces. “We’d finished shooting the show at six o’clock in L.A. and I’d be on a flight at eight o’clock to Vancouver, and then they’d only have me for a day or two days, and I’d leave for L.A. again!”
Add in the making of his third film due out this year, the psychological thriller “Prisoner,” and McMahon may just fit the definition of the word “workoholic,” but he says it really isn’t so.
“I just am always looking for the chance to do something I haven’t done before, so when the opportunity happens and I have the time, I take it.”
Working non-stop would slow down a weaker man, but Julian McMahon keeps himself fit and ready for whatever comes along.
“I was very disciplined when I was growing up, when referring to my sport, and I worked out a hell of a lot. I guess it’s part of my makeup,” says the actor, who is pushing forty years old but looks much younger and very strong.”I feel like I’m twenty still! I still thrive on it. If I don’t work out, I don’t feel good.”
To keep that impressive physique (that he shows off in just about every episode of “Nip/Tuck”), the 6?3” actor combines a routine of “running in the mountains” and “working out at home, I have a gym in my house” with “eating what I want.”
It’s a good life, and one that McMahon shares with his young daughter, the result of his second marriage, to actress Brooke Burns. The couple divorced shortly after their daughter was born, but are both committed to raising their child together. “My ex- wife and I get along very well, and we’re co-parenting our beautiful daughter and we love each other very much. But I wasn’t good at being married,” he admits wryly.
“I thrive on doing different things. The ability to live different lives is kind of part of the reason that you do it. And also the ability not to commit to one certain life,” McMahon admits.
“I was at the dentist yesterday and they said, ‘oh this will take six months,’ and I said, ‘I can’t do something for six months!’ I mean, I cn’t commit to myself for six months, let alone to the dentist - and then I started to think about what kind of a personality does that take to not want to? I just thrive on the gypsy life of an actor. And I feel like when I’m stuck for too long, I get claustrophobic, and get kind of - not depressed, but down on the whole. I feel like I’m getting swallowed, when I’m doing the same thing.”
Which is why he’s feeling so great about having such a banner year of 2007, having created four very distinctive characters in four extremely diverse projects.
“I feel like I’m doing pretty good these days. I’ve been around for a while, I’ve been working hard for a long time, and I always felt like, if you weren’t the kind of twenty-year-old shooting star, then it was about a war of attrition in this business. And I’ve just been standing around long enough. I love what I do. And I work hard at it. So I hope I’m doing good work, I should be! If I’m not - somebody should kick me in the ass and tell me to get the hell out of here!”
