Until recently this young British actor's career has been mainly dominated by television movies and series in the United Kingdom but with the release of the 2007 Hollywood film,
Across the Universe, his predominance in the world of film has been heightened beyond belief.
James Sturgess was born in the north of England in 1979 and studied at Manchesters University of Salford School of Media, Music and Performance.
Following a career in acting Jim also became a member of the National Youth Music Theatre from 1993 until 1995.At the same time, he was also a member in a seven member band called the Dilated Spies.
For ten years Jims career saw him appearing in television series such as, Im Frank Morgan, Hawkins and 3 installments of the UK series Quest.
Along with his stage and screen career Sturgess has also become known as the voice of radio characters such as his part in the 2005 radio play, Troilus and Cressida.
But it was his role as Jude in the 2007 movie, Across the Universe that really brought Sturgess to the attention of a worldwide audience, with a character reminiscent of a young John Lennon, Sturgess starred along side
Evan Hayden Wood, Bono, Salma Hayek, Eddie Izzard and Joe Cocker. His portrayal of a young man traveling from Liverpool, England, to America in an attempt to seek out his errant father, coupled with his stunning rendition of Beatles songs was defiantly the vehicle that Jim needed to propel his career onto the next plain.
The movie, which makes use of The Beatles 1960s catalogue is brought to life through psychodelic imaging and referencing the issues of the 60s in America including the murder of Martin Luther King Jr, the Viet Nam War, drugs, sex and revolution.
2008 will once again be a busy year for Sturgess as he stars as Gavin Kossef in Crossing Over, which will see him appearing with Hollywood greats,
Harrison Ford, Ray Liotta, Sean Penn, Cliff Curtiss and
Ashley Judd. The movie is set in Los Angeles and the storyline revolves around immigrants from different countries and backgrounds who share a common bond in desperately trying to gain legal status.
Also in 2008 Jim will star as George Bolyn in
The Other Boleyn Girl and once again he will be teaming up many well established celebrities such as
Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Eric Bana.
In the movie also listed for release in 2008, 21, Sturgess takes the lead roll as Ben Campbell in the fact-based story about six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings. His co-stars will include
Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne and
Kate Bosworth.
