The-Seth: So are you taking a break at home, or are you working? (I mean in general, not right this minute.)
-Alexz-: I had a break over Christmas, and I'm off to Maui with the family for 2 weeks. Then I'm back at work. I'll be working in LA on my record!
The-Seth: Awesome. Will you be recording? Do you have the songs all written?
-Alexz-: I have about 10 solid songs finished. I'll be writing in LA and recording.
-Alexz-: My brother and I write the music
The-Seth: Wow. 10 songs. That's great. Did you write any of the songs in the new season of Instant Star?
-Alexz-: Nope. I was too busy filming, and working on my own stuff for my record. My brother, Brendan Johnson wrote a song from season 2 though. "Another Thin Line".
The-Seth: How do you feel the music in the new season compares to last season (just in terms of feel)? Same kind of styles?
-Alexz-: Pretty much! Each song relates to an episode. It really is a compilation of a bunch of different styles, I find.
-Alexz-: Pop, rock.
The-Seth: What do you think the biggest difference is between season 1 and 2 (other than the music)?
-Alexz-: It's an older show this season. Jude's growing up. She's making mistakes and learning every episode.
-Alexz-: More edge, a lot of drama, and cute boys!! More cute boys!!!
-Alexz-: Jude has a band this season, as well. The Spiederman Mind Explosion.
The-Seth: Right; I chatted with Tyler the other day. And you guys played together for a concert special, right?
-Alexz-: Ya! That was a blast
The-Seth: So what can you tell me?
-Alexz-: We shot that in Toronto.
The-Seth: So you guys played stuff from the new season?
-Alexz-: Yup! The cast was there too!
-Alexz-: I got to perform "Skin" from season 1 with my brother on guitar. We wrote that song together
The-Seth: Had you played together onstage before?
-Alexz-: Ya, we've played in NY
-Alexz-: When it comes to "my music" Brendan is a huge part of my sound, and will be working with me in LA on my record. We're sort of a team.
-Alexz-: He's a producer
The-Seth: Is he your older or younger brother?
-Alexz-: Older. Bren's 23
-Alexz-: I'm one of six. Right in the middle of 10 kids. 6 brothers and 3 sisters - from the same mom and dad.

The-Seth: So how was that growing up? Were you always wishing for fewer siblings, or more? I could imagine it going either way.
-Alexz-: At times I had to get away and lock myself in the closet and write. But, most of the time I loved it! I couldn't imagine not having so many sibs. I have my own baseball team back at home. I carry that with me, ya know?
The-Seth: Totally. Also plenty of people to fill up a club when you're just starting to perform...
-Alexz-: I can fill a stadium with relatives. Let's not repeat that, though. lol!
The-Seth: You said that you didn't have time to write songs for the new season. is it hard to balance music and acting?
-Alexz-: At times. But, music always comes first.
-Alexz-: It's my first passion.
-Alexz-: Now, I get to focus on my record !
The-Seth: Right! So Instant Star was a pretty big hit. It changed a lot for you, I'm sure. How's your experience of fame different from Jude's?
-Alexz-: Well, I'm not as famous? lol. Jude wins a contest, I'm slowly chipping away at making a record, and taking time to write the songs. Its just a different thing from Jude.
-Alexz-: Jude battles with GMajor every episode and is trying to find her sound.
The-Seth: How much of Jude is there in you, and vice-versa?
-Alexz-: Jude is kind of me a few years ago. We differ in a lot of ways though. Different kinds of music inspires her, and different events inspires her to write.
-Alexz-: At the same time, Jude is like any other 16 year old girl with the same insecurities and lessons to learn..
-Alexz-: about life, love, family...the industry!
The-Seth: Right.
The-Seth: So I asked Tyler what the one thing I should ask YOU is, and he said:
The-Seth: "ask her if she wants to be as big as Madonna."

Alexz's roll in Final Destination 3 was as Erin Ulmer.

Alexz broke her nose while filming Final Destination 3.

When Alexz auditioned for Final Destination 3, she was originally going to be cast as the star, Wendy, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was going to be playing Erin, but their parts were switched.

She used to attend public school but is now home-schooled in preparation for an album.

Alexz starred in the movie Final Destination 3. Final Destination 3 has grossed $108 million at the box office, ahead of Final Destination 2 ($99 M) and just behind the original Final Destination ($113 M).

In a slightly chilly radio studio, songwriter Luke McMaster is laying some drum beats on a keyboard when his co-writer, Lights, bursts into the room and beelines to a piece of paper that has as many scribbled-out words as legible lyrics. She jots down a few words below the chorus before glowing with a wide smile, one almost too big for her petite frame.

"Bathroom trips are the best because you sit down and ... ," she pauses to uncross her arms and point to her head, "you get so many good ideas."

Lights, real name Valerie Poxleitner, sings the new lyrics to McMaster, who nods in approval.

The song is starting to take shape and fit the scene in which TV character Jude Harrison comes up with a song at her piano.

The pair, along with eight other songwriters, are spending a week holed up at Centennial College's campus at Mortimer and Carlaw Aves. writing original songs for the fourth season of CTV's Instant Star.

Throughout the week, the writers mix and match with one another to get different vibes. The show holds three songwriting camps per season to develop new songs.

Next door, Greg Johnston, Chris Burke-Gaffney and Damhnait Doyle momentarily struggle to rhyme a chorus line in a song about life as a celebrity.

Rob Wells and Christopher Ward, the week's co-ordinator, work on a grand piano in the main hallway of the college. Ward arrives with lyrics, which he hands over to Wells, who – given about 10 to 20 minutes – can hear the melodic line.

Wells plays a melody that sounds like a church hymn and Ward taps his feet, following on his guitar after jotting down the chords. Ward sings along, but a line in the chorus has too many syllables. They find the right word, hit record on their cassette player before heading back to the studio to lay out the tracks.

It's the beginning of the songwriting week and around a large boardroom table sit the musicians and the show's writers and producers at Epitome Pictures.

Executive producer Stephen Stohn tells everyone how well Instant Star is being received in 120 countries, but vents a little about the lack of a consistent schedule on CTV. One episode airs tonight at 8:30 after Canadian Idol; the final two of Season 3 will broadcast this Sunday at 7 and 7:30 p.m.

He says the first few episodes of the fourth season are going well and there's more maturing for Harrison, the young starlet played by Alexz Johnson, and the music is adding much texture to the show.

Head writer Tracey Forbes gives an outline of the story arcs that conclude the season. As she talks about ideas – empowerment, independence and the difficulties of relationships – and the tempo that she envisions for these songs, the musicians write down notes.

The songwriters say this show is sometimes easier to write for than themselves or other artists because Jude is a very universal character.

"It's not Ugly Betty, it's not an idiosyncratic character," says Johnston.

Writing music for TV is no longer stigmatized, say these songwriters, who have worked with some multi-platinum artists including Backstreet Boys, Hilary Duff and Nick Lachey.

"Shows like The O.C. and Grey's Anatomy are now making artists," says Johnston. "The music supervisors on those shows are so powerful now, and they can make or break you."

Doyle says TV is now the biggest avenue to get music out to the masses as it becomes more important than radio and CD sales. Think about all the catchy tunes you've heard through commercials then downloaded almost immediately.



The smell of barbecued shrimp lingers at Stohn's beachfront home as the songwriters and show writers mingle. After dinner, everyone sits around the family room while Stohn plays the week's CDs.

One by one, the songs bounce off the walls (and an Emmy for Degrassi) and the songwriters bob to the music. Standing in the doorway, Stohn taps his thigh to the beat, even strumming an air guitar on occasion.

"How is it possible that on Monday morning, we had only themes?" he says with a beaming smile.

The song from Johnston, Burke-Gaffney and Doyle is next up. "I can already see Jude singing during some of the montages," Forbes says after a dozen songs are played.

Later in the evening, a small group that includes McMaster and Lights gathers in a theatre room upstairs housing a TV the size of a twin bed. Stohn shows them a rough cut of an early episode in Season 4 in which one of their songs from an earlier camp – a Sgt. Pepper-inspired tune – is used for a number at the end of the show.

"Thanks for doing something so amazing with our song," McMaster says to Stohn. "It's just so satisfying."

Супердевочка является иконой. На что это похоже - играть эту роль?

Лаура: Конечно есть небольшая доля давления играть ее. Я хочу убедиться, что делаю хорошо свою работу и соответствую ожиданиям фанатов комиксов, но я также добавляю в роль свои ухищрения. Это достаточно забавно играть ее такой, какой она должна быть, добавляя небольшие мелочи, которые как мне кажется только украсят персонаж..

Актерская команда и съемочная бригада должно быть достаточно сплоченная команда после 6-и сезонов. Они были прохладны к Вам?

Лаура: Каждый спрашивал меня, нервничала ли я, присоединяясь к команде. Я думаю, меня больше всего беспокоил тот факт, что они были вместе на протяжении 6-и лет и я могла не вписаться, но все актеры оказались замечательными, когда я появилась. Особенно Эрика Дюранс, т.к. она была последней новой девушкой в шоу и знала, через что я должна пройти. Она взяла меня под свое крыло и сделала все, что бы я чувствовала себя комфортно. Вообще, быть частью Смолвиля поразительно, потому что я была фанатом этого шоу с первого сезона и мне нравится путь его развития… Я так горжусь быть частью этого шоу.

Как прошел процесс сближения Вас и Тома, так как вы предполагаетесь быть связанными на протяжении шоу?

Лаура: Да, это действительно было здорово. Мы подсмеивались друг на другом и заставляли друг друга смеяться все время. Я никогда не имела старшего брата, так что это мило, иметь такие дружеские отношения и он действительно помогал мне в моих сценах. Иногда я не знаю, как сделать реалистичней, что я говорю о других планетах и вещах, связанными с ними, а у него уже был в этом 6-летний опыт и это здорово.

Расскажи мне немного о Смолвильской версии Супердевочки.

Лаура: Мы руководствуемся мифологией DC Comics, но добавляем небольшую изюминку к роли. Она немного мятежна, она находит неприятности и делает много ошибок и создает себе врагов. Но Кларк здесь, чтобы научить ее делать правильное вместо неправильного, и в данном случае он играет ее старшего брата. И она больше, чем просто современная версия Супердевочки.

Что мы можем ожидать от Вашего персонажа в этом сезоне?

Дадут ли фанаты имя вашей паре, наподобие Кланы или Лексаны?

Лаура: Я не знаю, дадут ли. Это было бы здорово, что-то вроде Бранджилины.

Как прошел полет?

Лаура: Полет был забавным. Когда я впервые пробовала, на меня надели страховку и я делала много вариаций трюков и полета. Мы сделали многое в тот день. Вообще-то, мы подбрасывали некоторый реквизит, в который я как бы погружаюсь. Да, было очень забавно.

Вы намекали, что у Кары будут некоторые проблемы в этом сезоне. Правда ли, что она и Джон Джонз (Мартин Мэнхантер) недолюбливают друг друга?

Лаура: У них есть некое общее прошлое. Там определенно есть напряженность между ними. Мартиан Манхантер - друг Кларка, и она его недолюбливает, что вызывает напряженность в отношениях троицы.

Ходили слухи о спин-оффе Супердевочки. Вы слышали эти слухи? Вы заинтересованы в возможном спин-оффе?

Лаура: О, да, я люблю Кару, так что если бы они решили сделать это….мы это еще правда не обсуждали, но я бы с удовольствием взялась за это.

У Вас подписан контракт на весь сезон или только на часть?

Лаура: Я у них настолько, насколько они хотят меня видеть. Я имею в виду, я делаю седьмой сезон и делаю его для зрителей. Сценаристы собираются дождаться показа шоу, и если каждый зритель полюбит меня и мы достигнем новых вершин, они оставят меня в SMALLVILLE , а может и будут идти дальше к чему-то еще
